Today I found a 1866 Two cent piece in my own back yard!!!   I have one question though, why does it have a perfectly placed hole in it? And how rare is it ? My wife is super excited now and wants to go with me more than she already has! I think another detector may be in the works! thumbsup01

Hey, that's a great find! I've never found one, in spite of my user name! lol
Old coins are sometimes found with holes drilled in them. It was common to wear them around your neck as a good luck charm, or as a remembrance of a loved one.
From a collectible point of view, an 1866 Two-Cent Piece is relatively common and not worth a whole lot, but it's still incredibly cool to find one with a metal detector!
Congrats on your neat find! We would love to see a picture of it!

It looks like it cleaned up pretty good! So often those 2 cent pieces are totally toasted.
Congrats again! :clapping:

That's nice. From what I've read, they used to hang the coin over a doorway for good luck, but they were usually the large copper pennies. Congrats!

Nice find and in good shape to boot. I remember my 1st one a 1865, never seen one and thought I was rich when I recovered it. What type of detector do you think your wife will want?

i cannot say if its true but i was told by some older people one reason there are holes in some coins is they used to sew them to ther shirts as not to lose them because i quess back in the day a lot of shirts did not have pockets and this way they would not lose them i personly have about 50 coins with holes in them congrats on your finds that is a hard one to find now you can cross it off your list dennis
WTG! Nice find. Congrats |:cheering:
