Got a chance to hit a spot near me after talking to a town councilman the other day. The town uncovered a spot that had been overgrown and not touched in over 30 years. They will be turning it into a little herb garden. So, before they plant I've been allowed to detect the dirt.

Well, first I found a cool colonial flat button, which I thought might be a large cent when I first saw it in the dirt. But a few feet away out pops another disc. I thought, maybe another flat button?, but this time it was a coin I've never found before. It's an 1809 Capped Bust half cent!!!! :omg: I just couldn't believe it. It was only a few inches deep.

Even though I didn't find a silver to keep my little streak going, this half cent really made my day for sure. Now I don't want to breathe on it so I don't ruin it! My first large cent find, a 1798 Draped Bust cent was ruined after I washed it, taking all the detail with it! This one has great detail from what I can see, so I won't be washing it.

Thanks for looking and happy hunting everyone! :groovy:

If a silver streak has to broken.....a 1/2 cent should be the coin to break it. Very nice find, I'm still looking for one.

Wow, great find! :loveit:

Half Cents are a scarce find, I'd rather have one of those than a common silver any day! A nice early one too!

Congrats! :clapping:

Here's the half cent with a bit more of the dirt lightly wiped away. Once the coin thoroughly dried while in my coin pouch I was able to brush off the excess dust. But I don't think I will wash it or wipe any further because some of the whitish spots may get worse.

So, unless someone knows a magic way to clean this kind of penny, that's as far as I'm going.

Also, I found it's called a classic head half cent. Is it still known as a capped bust as well??
