My oldest coin

Despite the mild winter, open fields in this area have stayed frozen until recently so I have been doing most of my detecting in the woods where the ground cover has protected the soil. Two months into the year and I haven't found any silver or real keepers until Tuesday.

After hours of roaming a wooded area and heading back to my car I found my oldest coin to date under a root on the trail.

I also later found my first silver (barely), a 1964 Rosie in a field that was partly defrosted. It was nice to find my first silver but the large cent really made my day, week and probably my month.

Added note: This is my third large cent but was by far the cleanest. A little hydrogen peroxide and gentle rubbing gave nice results. I don't know if I could get it cleaner but I didn't want to push my luck too much.

That is one fine coin. I have to laugh at your two months into the year line because most winters any hunting at all in Jan or Feb is amazing, never mind finding a coin like that! I can see you are going to give me a run for my money this year. I suppose a little father-son competition never hurt anyone... or at least it won't so long as I win!!! lol

Thank's everyone for your comments. I don't find many nice keepers so the ones that I do find are near and dear to me. That clump on the tails side seems to be part of the coin or a piece of metal that somehow got welded to the coin. Interesting.

Yes, I believe there are 20 varieties of the coin which was something new that I learned after I found it. I'm not 100% sure how to distinguish the different ones but I now have a couple of books to read which hopefully give me more information. The history behind some of these finds is always facinating to me and I always seem to be learning more as I go along.
