It has been a while since I last posted any finds, mid-September I think it was. But then again I didn't get to do much detecting during the second half of last year. However, I did get out for a few short hunts during December, and was able to score with several good finds.
December 3 and 5 2011
These are from two afternoon hunts at a local park. For most of the year I had not been able to drive long distances to explore other locations, but the local sites can still yield good finds if one is patient enough. The photos were taken indoors, so they are not as sharp as I would like. :thinkingabout:
I have yet to clean this 1847 large cent, but it does look like it will clean up well. I ended the year with 64 coppers.

A 1876 Queen Victoria Canadian one cent.

This 1920 Canadian 5 cent silver coin (fish scale) made for a nice surprise. They always do. lol

The silver coins I picked up on December 3rd.

I also dug up seven Indian Head cents that same day. Last year I had been concentrating on finding Indian Head cents whenever I could get out, and I ended up with 247 for the year.

December 5th was a very short hunt, but at least I managed to lock on to a 1864 2-Cent piece before heading home. It was my 10th 2-Cent piece of the year.

December 30 and 31 2011
The year was now coming to a close, but I did get to detect two more times before bidding it goodbye. They were short hunts, but I still did not go home empty-handed.
When I first dug up this pretty 1870 seated dime I recalled that there were low mintage in those years. I looked it up on my phone, and sure enough this one had a mintage of 471,000. Too bad it did not have a 'S' mint mark, as there were only 50,000 minted. Still, I can't complain. This one made it 243 silver coins for the year.

The following day I detected for a short while in the afternoon at another small park. It was small, but a generous one, as it gave up eight Indian Head cents.

This was my first hunt of 2012. I took advantage of some available time and headed to another local park. It had been a tad hard digging into the hardening soil, but I kept at it seeing as the park was yielding the goods - a couple of Barber dimes, dated 1900 and 1910-D, eight Indian Head cents, and a beaten up old copper.

Today was a beautiful day, with the temperature hovering in the 50's. I had commitments to attend to in the morning, but later in the afternoon I took advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and headed to a small park a friend had brought to my attention.
I had hoped to score with Indian Head cents, but unfortunately it turned out that most of the park had been redone when underground pipes were installed. :-\ Anyway, since I was already there I settled on detecting the outer edges of the park. There were many clad coins, but not much in the way of older coins. However, I did score with two good coins, a 1838 large cent and a 1845 half dime.
It's not a bad looking large cent. Hopefully it will clean up nicely.

Now this 1845 seated half dime more than made the hunt worthwhile. :shocked01: There were 1,564,000 minted, but the great thing about this one is that it has a repunched date, which increases the value. :loveit:

As it was last year, I don't anticipate being able to detect often this year either, but I sure will try to do the best I can with whatever time I have available.
I wish you all a very successful and fun detecting year! :beerbuddy:
