Once again work kept me from any evening hunts this week. I had to travel to Arkansas for work, and though I would have been interested to get in some swing time down there I wasn't up for tackling the logistics of transporting the detector.

At any rate, I got out a few times this weekend. Saturday I mostly hit tot lots in an on and off driving rain. They were not very productive. Sunday I hit the dirt at an odd spot I've started hunting this year. Within the first 20 minutes of the hunt I had pulled four coins - two Mercs and two wheats - and an older looking item that I assume was a buckle. The next 1.5 hours of the hunt did not yield anything of note. It's odd how that works sometimes. The '45 Merc sound just like silver, but the '18 was a long shot at best - I was certain it would be deep iron. I was shocked and pleased to find it was silver at 8 or 9. Needless to say I dug a lot of deep rusty nails after that. I'm afraid I lack the ear or skill or discipline some of you other folks seem to have when it comes to picking these things out on the Etrac. The gash in the Merc was not caused by me - it looks like it was clipped by something. Oddly enough I think I've dug 3 or 4 silver dimes like this.

So all in all another modest weekend - 134 coins total worth $8.83 including the two Mercs, 5 wheats, and two older Canadian pennies, - plus the usual buttons, trinkets, junk rings, etc. The two Mercs make it all good though.

Happy hunting!

Congrats on the finds, especially on the silvers!

Don't worry about the nails, they get everyone. If it sounds good, and pinpoint where it detects, then it's going to get dug. Sometimes it turns out to be a screw or nail. Just part of the quest.

Welcome back! Nice haul and awesome that you found a couple of mercs. The earrings look interesting also. I like the M&M one.

Nice finds, congrats on the silver! |:cheering:

It has taken me a long time to learn to hear the difference between deep iron falsing and silver. It just didn't come easily to me, either. For the most part I have it down now, but I still dig an occasional deep rusty nail.

Very nice hunt, the buckle thing is interesting. Yeah, that gash looks old. |:cheering:

Congrats on the silver. There is a fine sound distinction between an iron false and a silver, but I certainly dig my share of nails, especially on deep targets. Just comes with the territory (one tip, BTW, is use sizing pinpointing (not the default), and sometimes you can get the shape of the nail by pinpointing on it, but this doesn't work in heavy trash sites).

I have yet to be able to hear a difference between a bulbous ferrous (those biggish sort of ferrous targets like bolts that seem to live around 19-46 or so), and certain affected silvers where the silver is right up against a ferrous (and often come in at 19-46 or so). Sometimes silver, sometimes ferrous.

Modest? It looks like a pretty darn good weekend to me! That's a lot of coins, and the two Mercs are icing on the cake!

Sometimes I can distinguish a deep rusty nail if the signal is somewhat one directional and there is nulling on each side of the tone. Other times I'm fooled, but I guess that just comes with the territory. I figure it's better to dig a few deep rusty nails than miss some deep silver.

Congrats on the finds! :clapping:

If that is modest results, I would hate to describe my finds. Great job. :perfect10:

Very nice. I have heard that the thinner dimes (your 1918) do make for funny sounds. Congrats on your hunting. It has been my experience that after I dig a questionable signaland its silver, I then dig a lot of rusty iron.
