hit a familiar cellar site (where i found the colonial coin spill ) yesterday for quite a few hours as i still had a good feeling about that place . well i found a good number of buttons and a couple of early ones with some unique backmarks . these two examples i believe are from the very late 1790's to about 1815 the first has an eagle design and is most likely an American made button

the next is a very uncommon because while most British buttons of this era have a crown embossed backmark to represent England or British made this one has the Welsh three plumes insignia

also i found a mega huge dropped musket ball , one of the largest i come across in some time although i haven't officially used the micrometer on it i know it has to be atleast .65 caliber a huge round it is

unfortunately the only coins i found was a 41 wheatie and a couple of clad dimes but my find of the day was an all time first for me

it still was a great day because of the sterling silver thimble i found , something thats been on my list for years now .

Those two buttons with the unique backmarks are super cool especially the one with the Eagle .
That thimble is the best one I have seen posted or found anywhere . I've never found a thimble that wasn't crushed or corroded . Awesome finds Del !!! :perfect10: thumbsup01 thumbsup01

I dug the almost exact button a while back and was told that it is a british button. I was under the same impression. Perhaps Im wrong, just passing that along.

are you talking about the eagle embossed one Jesse?? i've never seen the eagle representing anything British related , the only way i can see someone saying that it might be British or French is because the word colour is spelled like that on the back. we Americans don't spell color with the U anymore but the fact is that the old english / latin version is spelled with the U and is still used in european nations today . the first settlers were in fact english and western european people and for a time we did alot of things as they did , later the U was dropped from the word and became more of an Americanized slang .

Dan,
Nice, as always...next time you play monopoly you can pull out your custom silver. Hey, last week I found a ball similar to your's. Would that be fired from one of those flared belled guns?

Drew if its lead , its probably a musket ball either dropped or fired (depending on any marks it might have) a digital micrometer will acurrately measure the caliber but you can get pretty close with a tape measure . 1/2 inch = .50 caliber , 3/4 = .75 caliber , but its hard to determine if it was from an older flintlock or newer percussion type musket.

Dan where has G been? :dontknow:

I sent him a message on Monday that Al and I were in his area and looking to see if he wanted to hook up. He responded back that he's alive, but going to his mom's and would have to pass. I guess mom is a good reason not to go detecting
