1787(?) Connecticut Copper +

There is nothing like a couple of hours of detecting to help one relax - except when finding coins that make your heart thump wildly. lol It was a late in the day hunt at a local site, and it proved to be more fun than I had anticipated. :happydance01:

This was my first find, a Connecticut Copper. It appears to be dated 1787. :thinkingabout: The first photo is as found, and the other two after applying coin conditioner to remove the surface soil. It is copper number 39 of the year.

The 1899 Barber dime was my next good find.

After a while I picked up another copper, though this one is worn. It is larger than the Connecticut Copper. I can't quite make out the year. It is copper number 40.

I used to use Blue Ribbon Coin Conditioner, but apparently it is no longer in production. I now use Coin Care. It is less costly, but it does appear to darken the coppers a bit. Still, it does a great job in removing much of the surface soil. :yes:

I do need a new digger. lol The soft handle is torn, so the steel end is exposed. It is wrecking havoc on my palm. :blackeye: And yet I can't stop digging. lol

I am curious about the larger copper too. :thinkingabout: I am now better able to make out a few of the details, so hopefully I will be able to make some comparisons with online images. :yes:

The Coin Care conditioner does a very good job of removing light surface soil from Indian Head cents. Caked-on soil can be a problem though. :yes:

I use the coin conditioner on lightly soiled coppers. It does a nice job in removing the soil and adds a protective coat. I apply the liquid with cotton swabs (Q-tip), until most or all of the soil is removed. I much prefer the Blue Ribbon Coin Conditioner though, as it does not have a tendency to darken the coppers. Unfortunately, it appears that it is no longer available. Blue Ribbon is what I had used on a 1786 Connecticut Copper I found a few years ago. That one has a nice brownish tint now. :yes:

I have just been fortunate with a few sites, that's all. :yes: Unfortunately the majority of the coppers found at parks do not hold up as well as those found at cellar holes. :crying02: I'm sure glad the above Connecticut Copper did though. :happydance01:

Stop finding coppers Angel lol I've been trying to find out what they are and have some limited success. :shocked01: Nice 1787 Connecticut by the way lol The closest variety I can find for it is Breen's 789. The reverse lines up nicely for that variety but the obverse is not quite close enough for a match. It may be a muled die where the obverse does not match the known reverse for that type. Yours is also struck off center shifting down towards 5 o'clock, so some details are lost or nearly lost on it. A dealer specializing in CT coppers may be your best bet. It could be an unknown muling of dies :happydance01: The other copper may be a William III copper shown here

Nice finds Angel. The other copper may be a Draped Bust, the 00 with the line over it could be part of the 1/100 on the reverse :thinkingabout:

Good eye Mike. thumbsup01 That would be my initial reaction. Those '00's are actually worn 9's though. A Draped would have been nice too of course. :smitten: The obverse too has a visible S on the lower right-hand side, so that excludes a Draped Bust cent. :yes:
