View Full Version : Two Silver Coins and Something Else
I got in a short hunt at the spot last night, and did pretty well. In addition to 7 wheats, a '43 Canadian penny, and a '52 nickel I dug a well worn 1917 S Merc and a '53 Rosie. I also pulled a nifty item that I'm sure is silver (it isn't marked and I haven't tested it yet). It reads 1st Sep. Co. N.G.N.Y. and has the name of the maker on the back. I'm assuming this has something to do with the National Guard of New York. There is a small hole on each corner as it it might have been sewed to something. I'm not really sure. Any insight would be appreciated.
Thanks!

I believe that it's a military tag from the early 1900's (National Guard).
Congrats on more silver.

Possibly Rifleman? or Marksman ?? I tried to find out something on it but never came up with the exact match. I'm guessing around mid teens :dontknow: It looks really old though lol Looks like silver too. Nice find, a one of a kind, for sure. Will look good next to any other military items you may find.

Man, Z you are tearing it up lately.
I remember a year or so ago you were complaining about never finding silver.
Good to see you found a honey hole.

If that plate isn't silver, I'll knit you a watch.
Nice find. Those off-the-wall finds are the best IMHO.

Thanks for the comments all! I did find this online:
http://dmna.state.ny.us/historic/reghist/numbered/Copyright.htm
The Chart of the New York National Guard, 1877 - 1916 shows the first separate company existing in Pen Yan from 1877 - 1890 and then being disbanded and apparently moved to Rochester where it existed from 1890 - 1916. I'm still not sure exactly what it was though, my best guess would be something that would be sewed onto a uniform. But I don't know if it was part of the uniform or maybe something someone in the company had made for themselves. Regardless, it certainly is one of my better finds. It might be neat to show it to the New York State Military Museum, but it seems like they are pretty busy from their contact page.
Happy Hunting.
