Late in the day I needed to get out of the house to clear my head, but on the way out I grabbed my E-Trac. I was not in my regular detecting clothes though, as I left the house in shorts and sandals.
Driving along I called Angie to discuss some forum matters, and as we talked I drove in the direction of the site I had worked yesterday afternoon. Once there I contemplated working an area under a large tree. The shade would provide some relief from the heat, as it was over 95 at the time. I had not intended to remain for long though, but when I picked up an old button an a worn colonial coin within five minutes, that thought quickly became history. lol I was very focused now, detecting at a snail's pace. The copper had been deep, at about 9.5 inches, and a fast swing would had definitely made me miss the target.

Not very long after that find I picked up another button and a 1776 King George. This one had been slightly deeper than the first one, but it had sounded off a bit stronger.

It was a while before I hit on another good signal, not far from where I had picked up the two coppers. Did I mention I was detecting at a snail's pace? lol Anyway, the target was another deep one, easily 10+ inches. Here too the iron was a problem, but there was no mistaking this signal. I dug up some soil, and when the probe hit on the target I had visions of a seated or bust quarter. The tone was that beautiful. But once I retrieved the target I saw that it was another copper, though this one was different. I saw the design and my heart skipped a beat! The caked-on dirt did not allow me to see much detail at first, but the bit that I scraped off was confirming what I thought I had - it was a 1787 Fugio cent! :happydance01: I called Angie to let her know what I had found. I was quite excited.
When I had left the house, I did not take my camera, so at this point I decided to go back home to pick it up in order to take some photos while there was daylight. I marked where I had left off though.

Once back at the site, I took photos of the coins. I then began to detect, picking up from where I had left off. Soon I had another similar signal, and this one was only about a foot and half from where I dug the Fugio. Again the iron was interfering with the signal, but it was clear that a good target was under my coil. I cut a plug, dug up some soil, and there it was - another Fugio cent! :omg: I was speechless! lol I called Angie and began to babble like a fool. Angie thought I was making it up. 8/ But there was no doubt as to what I held in my hand. This must have been a spread spill. :thinkingabout:

Here are the coppers. :happydance01:

I also picked up some old buttons, and an item that appears to have 1607 and 1707 etched on it. I have no clue as to what it may be. Junk, I suppose. lol

Very sweet finds, can't wait to see the next post of the finds while clearing your head! I find that detecting has become one of my best releases from everything else! Congrats on finding that mental clarity, which is always needed now and then, and the those fantastic old coppers!

Damn, I love reading these posts, it gives us old newbies incentive knowing these great finds are down there....even if we aren't the ones finding them. :daydream:
Damn, that really puts my 1890 IH that I found last night in some serious perspective, huh? lol Amazing digs Angel. I can't imagine pulling stuff like that. Congrats!

Those are beautiful coppers Angel  You're the only person I know who can go out on an impromptu hunt for an hour and dig four coins from the 1700's. :omg: lol
I would not have known what the Fugio cent was. That is the first time I've seen that design. Did you determine their variety and worth?
:envious:... did you leave that marker for me to find the spot later ? lol
Freakin' Awsome! Your finds completely amaze me. |)
I can't figure what I'm doing wrong 8/ I can't seem to find these type of spots...and we are in the same area :hairpulling:

I love that when detecting at the beach. :smitten: But hunting at a park here wearing shorts and sandals when mosquitoes are active only gives them more meat to enjoy. lol Plus my feet get all dusty. :shocked01: But it's all good. lol
Sweet :perfect10: I wonder if there are even more there.
The finds have been sparse at this previously heavily hunted site, but it has yielded me several nice keepers over the years. It is my 'go for a relaxing hunt' site when I have an hour or two late in the day.

I agree. I enjoy detecting even when I don't find anything exciting especially if the site is quiet and peaceful. It does help with the stresses of the day.

I think it was my wearing the sandals that did it. rofl I must have felt the copper signals flowing through my feet. lol
I haven't attempted to clean the Fugio cents. I really don't want to mess them up while attempting to remove some of that crusted-on soil. I will have to take my time with that. Some of the varieties are quite valuable though. :loveit:

lol An X marks the spot, but it was done with dry grass, so the wind may not allow the marker to remain. lol

Angel, I imagine you must have been using the E-trac when you found these. How do you think the Sovereign would have fared? I'm curious to know if I'm missing stuff on my hunts, especially deep stuff.
I apologize if comparisons between the two detectors have been discussed but I'm just curious to know about this specific hunt.
I swear that when I see your finds, I think I'm swinging the wrong end of the detector.
Thanks.

Oh, come on! lol Some of those items are interesting actually. I am still wondering about that item with what appears to be years etched on it. :thinkingabout:

No apology needed, Bob. That is what the forum is for.
Yes, I am using the E-Trac exclusively during my hunts. In past years I have used both the DFX and the Sovereign GT at the site I worked yesterday. I have picked up some nice coins from that location with both machines, but it was always a challenge working them due to the EMI in the area and the iron in the soil. Depth with both machines had to be compromised for the most part, since the sensitivity levels had to be reduced enough to avoid excessive chatter.
I am finding that the E-Trac is handling the EMI and iron much better than the DFX and GT could, even though I am still dealing with chatter when using higher sensitivity than what the E-Trac suggests. I do ignore the suggested sensitivity level, setting it as high as I can before the chatter becomes unbearable or does not allow me to hear the signal of deep targets.

Just when I think you can't possibly top yourself... you do! :shocked04:
Each of your finds are more amazing than the last. All of these coppers are spectacular, but those Fugio Cents are mind blowing! I used to patronize a local coin shop in my youth ran by an elderly gentleman named Ernie. I remember one time that Ernie showed me a Fugio Cent that he owned. He was really proud of it. At the time I was really too young to appreciate it. Now I understand how rare and historic they are.
Congrats on the incredible finds, Angel! I can't wait to see what you find next! |)

Dang! :omg: DAAAAANG! :omg: Not too shabby!
So when you're working at a snail's pace for a couple of hours, how big of an area do you generally cover? 10 ft x 10 ft? 20x20'? Also, is the assumption that old coins and relics are everywhere at your sites? I ask because when I try to go that slow, I always freak myself out that maybe I picked the wrong 20' x 20' area, so before you know it, I'm all over the place again! Any advice? :dontknow:

When on planned hunts I do try to select an area to grid, usually 40 x 40 (eyeballing size), but not all locations require detecting at a snail's pace. The type of targets and trash a site has yielded during past hunts helps me determine how much time and effort I should spend working it. But once I do start a grid I stick to it. Doing so has worked well for me. This requires much patience, for the desire to jump to that patch of ground on the other side of the field is always pulling at you, especially when nothing has been dug for an hour or more.
Yesterday's hunt was more of a leisure one, but the particular site does demand a very slow and methodical approach. Fast swings when working an E-Trac at this site will yield poor results, of that I am certain. Though I did not employ a grid during the hunt, the section I did work was no larger than 30 x 30. I do plan to work it again from various angles until I am satisfied that I have worked it as best as possible.

lol  :-\ Sadly, you just described me. The only difference for me is... after working the 'other' area, I usually come to the realization
that Barbers and Seated coins are probably back in my original spot. So back I go trying to find them. lol

Other than your choice of detecting clothes, I'd say you had a great day lol Very nice pair of Fugios. They are always nice to find and rarely are they in that nice condition :shocked04: I've been thinking about that lead? slug, and all I can come up with is someone commemorating the 100th anniversary of Jamestown, VA. Looks like you had a stellar day |)

Sorry Viking, I neglected to answer this part of your question. :embarrassed:
I can only speak for myself, for we all tend to have our own effective style of hunting and the way we approach a given site. When I detect at a site that has been worked well over the years, but that has had a history of yielding old coins, I work it as if there are definitely coins there, and that I just have to get my coil over them.
I give the site my full attention and concentration, not swinging lackadaisically, but rather being very attentive to what the machine is telling me. Often all you get is a hint that there is a conductive piece of metal under the coil (I always detect with conductive tone), but at an old site that is enough to stop me on my tracks to get me to further examine the signal. I have pulled some very nice surprises at many old sites by taking this there must be a coin there approach.
Does that mean I will always find old coins? Not at all! The fact is that one cannot find what is not there. Also, what coins remain at some sites may be beyond the machine's depth capabilities, or the trash and/or iron concentration may be too much for the machine to properly latch on to the good target. In fact, such sites can be quite a challenge to work. But taking this approach has definitely worked very well for me. I consider it a successful hunt if I walk away from the site with just one nice keeper.

Detecting in shorts was somewhat liberating, but it does give the mosquitoes too much skin to work on. lol The item does look to be lead. I think it is a keeper. thumbsup01
The Fugios did have my heart pumping. lol I was very happy to see them in good condition, though the obverse on both coins do have verdigris on them. I just removed the surface soil, and will leave them like that for now.
