I was able to get out with my E-Trac for the second time, we had great weather here on both Saturday and Sunday. I found a park in a nearby small town that is gving up the occasional keeper. Here are my totals for the weekend, both Saturday and Sunday:

(1) Indian Head 1888
(7) Wheat Cents 1911, 1929D, 1934, 1939, 1946, 1957, 195:clapping:
(41) Memorial Cents
(1) Mercury Dime 1936
(9) Clad Dimes
(1) Silver Washington Quarter 1944
(14) Clad Quarters

I've only worked a small portion of this park, so I'm hoping that it will give up more keepers. Conspicuously absent from my finds are nickels. I'm still learning the E-Trac so I have been hunting in their Coins mode. I can't figure out if it's nulling nickels out or if I'm just not familiar with the signal a nickel produces.

Very nice!!! Congrats on the silver; great second hunt with the E-Trac!

The coins program won't discriminate out the mid-tones, but maybe you just aren't digging them? For me, nickels (depending on the type) hit very solidly between 12-10 and 12-13 and the Co number doesn't vary much. The worn V-nickel I dug today hit at a solid 12-12.

Beavertail pulltabs tend to hit in that range as well. >:{

You had a good weekend for sure. thumbsup01 Good score on the silver. :clapping: The nickels will become apparent once you get used to the tone; the tone seems dull but it is steady and identifiable. Look for Fe/Co numbers in the 12-12 through 12-14 range, though most times it will be 12-13, unless they are deeply buried. :yes:

I think you're right, I just hear that lower tone on nickels and don't dig, thinking they're pulltabs. In the future I will watch for numbers in the 12-10 to 12-14 range. Thank you both for the tips!

Second hunt ?? You did great thumbsup01 Especially from a park that only occasionally gives up finds. You dug a lot of clad too. I think you will do good there judging from what you have found already. Don't be afraid to dig some of the deeper, less perfect signals, just to learn about what is at that level. You may be pleasantly surprised :shocked04:

Just wait 'til you start getting comfortable with that E-Trac. You are certainly off to a great start. And, speaking of nickels, war nickels can live a little higher, in the 12-15/12-16 range, you will certainly want to dig those.

I hit the same park today after work for about an hour. I had to quit early because the mosquitos were brutal! I will definitely have to remember to take mosquito repellent next time! I did manage to find a 1943 Mercury Dime before I quit though. This was my third E-Trac hunt and my fourth silver coin so far. (Fourth silver with my new E-Trac since I started hunting again after twelve years. I found a ton of silver coins back in the 1980s with my old Fisher machine.)
