About 3 days back I found a corroded war nickel at the beach, it, I could read the mintmark but could not get the date, I looked in the Red book and there was no special errors for the S mintmark war nickel, I decided to tumble it the same way I do with my clad, I ran the tumbler for 24 hours with 3 ammonia changes within that time, I always clean my clad with 100% ammonia and it does the trick, the photos below show the different stages of the cleaning along with a photo of the jewelry mix I use in the tumbler.

Its just some jewelers mix that I picked up at a jewelry store, I bought a pound of it for 18 bucks, its stainless steel and lasts forever.

Steve, So you run it with white gravel until the nickel is clean but gray,,,,Then you use the jeweler mix and it shines up as shown? You use ammonia with the gravel too? no water or detergent?
My tax $$$ is due any day now and am getting a tumbler (single or dual jar:huh:thinkingabout:).I am getting the one that clevengers detectors sells and he has both single and dual jar tumblers.
Basically I use jeweler mix for the whole process with straight ammonia and no water or soap, I change the dirty ammonia after about an hour, put in clean ammonia and run it for about 4 hours, dump the dirty, put in new ammonia and run it over night, in the morning I get rid of the dirty ammonia one more time and run it with clean ammonia for 10 minutes to give it the shine.

What is he using for a tumbler:huh: A Cement Mixer:huh:thinkingabout: rofl
I ordered the dual jar (plus some extra belts for insurance) Thanks for the tips.
I ordered 5 Lbs of stainless media from STM (stainlesstumblingmedia.com) this is fine stuff and ought to get into the tiny area's that need cleaning ;)
now i have to figure how much media to how many coins (don't want to overload the tumbler)hopefully instructions will come with the tumbler and answer this question :shocked01:
I am just cleaning up the coins so i can roll them and take them to the bank thumbsup01
Everything together should be about 2/3 to 3/4 of the barrel. You have to leave enough space for it to tumble properly. And yes the cement mixer is almost ready to roll. Just waiting on some E bay stuff.
