Pulled this treasure today . If you can make out that mintmark  PM me lol I can't make it out with a magnifier, tho probability suggests that its an S. I didn't have my magnifier with me in the field today, so imagine hunting for a couple of hours with that thing in my pouch, then still not being able to find out when I got home. I guess if you can't tell, it doesn't matter.

Interesting, this came up as a solid CO 43 at 2 inches on the E-Trac. It even airtested that way, so nothing in the ground was mucking with it. I don't know how the signal translates to numbers, but I'm guessing a really thin dime will ring lower. I was certain it was a memorial, but dug it to help date the site. Alot of times I won't dig shallow 12-43s. Just goes to show, you never know.

I'm gonna vote S only because I would cry too much if it was a &quot:grin: in that condition :crying02: :crying02:

I'm guessing an S... maybe teh co number was so low because it is worn thinner?? Nice find!

Can you post a picture of the mint mark area enlarged?
It *looks* to be an S, as I have several 1916 dimes in about the same condition, but it's very hard to tell.

Looks like an S from enlargement I was able to do on my Mac. Still a nice find though and I could be wrong on my examination but thats what I saw.

I agree, it's an 'S', but you can't beat those few seconds of thrill at seeing a worn mintmark on a 1916 merc. I've had a few of those moments. We will find one yet, Randy! :happydance01:
