Hi all. Hope you're all well and staying safe and sane in these unusual and concerning times. I've had the opportunity to hunt 3 times in the past week - actually my first time out since returning from overseas and having a mandatory 14-day quarantine. Went with close detecting friends on these hunts, but drove separately and maintained reasonable distances from each other in the fields except when we unearthed something really good. Well, that happened quite a bit on these hunts as we discovered two separate colonial tavern sites. Had been bopping around last Saturday in a few fields when the property owner stopped by and informed us of the first tavern site in a corn field down the road (on no maps but described in the town's early history). We hit it only for 30 minutes right at the end of the day and I pulled a 1798 DB and a few buttons. The no-date Braided Hair was dug earlier in the day at another unremarkable field.

My friend also dug a DB (1803, not pictured). Safe to say we were excited to return this past Monday for a full six hour hunt. Epic would be an understatement as we pulled 15 coppers and other great coins along with 50 or so buttons and other relics.
67840
Here's my coin take above. Another DB (1796), 3 Matron LCs (1816, 1820 and 1822), 2 Massachusetts Coppers (1787 and 1788), a wiped KG2, 1864 Two Center, 1896 Indian and a spectacular 1780 Two Reales!

Then yesterday another friend of mine hit a private yard nearby and what I had long thought was another tavern site. Well, I think my hunch was true!
67841
We dug 14 more coppers, a wiped 1 Reale and an 1835 Capped Bust Dime (see above). This shot is of all of our coins with two of my friends Matrons missing. My take was another Massachusetts Copper (my third in 3 days - insanity), 2 more Matron LCs (1816 and 183?), an 1802 DB, another wiped KG2 or 3 and the bust dime. The bust dime came from the private yard and since he had invited us over while seeing us in the field at the second tavern site I ended up giving it to him. I would've never dug it otherwise. Good karma for the metal detecting gods I say! All kidding aside I was happy to give it to him. Giving is always better than receiving and I've "received" a lot on these past few hunts!

Here's close-up shots of the bust dime. Just a beautiful coin. Thanks for looking and happy hunting all!

I can't decide if this post inspires me to go out detect or sell my machine and give up!

This is one of the most mind blowing posts I've ever seen on any metal detecting forum. For those of us who are "coin" people this is a dream come true. I have looked at this post several times over the past several days trying to think of an adequate response. I am at a loss for words!

I would love to see some closeup photos of some of the better coins.

HUGE congrats, John! :notworthy:

Now excuse me while I wipe the drool off my keyboard.

John - Tony stated it best. I looked at all the coins and frankly everyone you have in there except for IHP, I have never found. Helps if I lived in an area that was inhabited by coin toting folks. Congrats on all the finds. Looking forward to the YouTube video if you have it (been awhile since I have been on You Tube).

Not only are you in an area rich with history, it must be great to hunt with all the tremendous views you have where you are. Truly jealous.

Thanks! Yeah, we've returned several times to these two tavern sites. Total of 47 coppers, 1/2 Reale, 2 Reale and about 120 buttons.

Thanks Drew! You don't find virgin field sites like this too often, but if you research enough and have a bit of luck on your side you can still find them, at least in Vermont!

Good night!!!! What a bunch of dream coins! Most in fantastic shape too!

Thanks Jared!

Great finds glad you did and glad your healthy

Thanks much!

Thanks! Yeah, I've found tavern sites, especially if you can find them near crossroads and along historical routes can be big producers. These two sites fit that bill.

Thanks Al! Yes, feel lucky to have found these two sites.

YOW!!! Epic is indeed an understatement John! Look at that awesome MA copper!

Thanks Jeff! Yeah, I'm pleased with the condition of all 3 Mass Coppers. I'm finding it's very hard to find the exact varieties though. Much more difficult than other state coppers.

My God that's insane! Talk about hitting the motherload, bet it was hard to sleep that night knowing there's more out there. WTG on an amazing hunt!

Thanks and ha ha! Yeah, after the first short hunt at the end of the first day we planned to go back 2 days later. Couldn't wait. I walked onto the field, turned the machine on, walked 5 yards in the first corn row and pulled the 1st Mass. I knew right then it was gonna be an epic day!

Crazy cool!

Thx!

Amazing, John. Unbelievable.

Thx David! This was in your neck of the woods btw - relatively close.

Thanks for the kind words Tony! I'll be sure to post some close-ups of the better coins in my next post, which btw contains more old great looking coppers from these sites!

Thanks so much! I'll definitely post it on YT at some point this spring/summer. Working on the France trip vids right now.

Thanks! Still on cloud nine! I"ve found a few virgin fields over the years, but these rank right up there with the best of them.
