Found this today on my outing with Dave in Iowa. Got 8 wheats but no silver. :ticked:

(Merc is in there for size reference :) )

I can't find much on this from my quick search other than it being from the 114th Field Artillery unit. Can't even put a time frame on it yet. :thinkingabout:

If anyone has some good sources for identifying military items, please pass it on.

Thanks

UPDATE:

After searching with not much luck on this specific insignia, I contacted a person at the US Field Artillery Association. After a brief conversation she said sure, send me a photo and I'll run it by a few people. It really is nice to run into people from time to time that will go way out of their way to help someone else. Very, very nice people.

Here are the responses I received the next day...

Classification: UNCLASSIFIED
Caveats: NONE

Hi,
There was a 114th Field Artillery Regiment during WWI which served with
the 30th Division. It would have been organized in 1917 and disbanded in
1919. 30th was National Guard from TN, SC and NC with battle honors of
Somme Offensive, Ypres-Lys and Defensive Sector. It is an officer's collar
insignia. All that said I believe it is from the post war 114th FA
Battalion dating from 1926 because of its gilt color. WWI insignia would be
blackened.

Well, this is after 1907 and the change in the guns from left over right and
no wheel I the middle like the 1901 insignia, and before the end of WWII
when they went to back clasps. That makes sense because the 114th FA has a
lineage going back to the 1920s, and is the Mississippi National Guard FA
unit. It just so happens I OC'ed the 114th at NTC in 1999 when they did a
rotation out there. Not sure why it would be in Iowa from what I know of
the unit. Perhaps Dr. Dastrup knows more.

Googled it with images, but couldn't find that one. I think everyone is probably right. Pre WWII. But I hope it's older ;) Nice looking military piece!!
