View Full Version : Not an average hunt

Started out as an average hunt with Don (very nice Alex was able to join). I’ll see if I can keep the story straight. Somewhere in the United States  we started with an 1830s house and all I got was a worn out merc, flat button (no design) and a couple weird aluminum token saying “tested sealed Ohio.” Next couple yards couple Indian and button with an interesting design. But last and final yard was amazing. Home owner seemed reluctant but finally said ok however wanted no hole dug without first letting him know. Usually that sends us down the road. But I decided to not be discouraged as it was a compelling red brick mid 1800s home. First target called out the homeowner for an iffy Indian at 8 inches. Cutting through roots ugg thought no way would be digging anymore! Turned out to be a 3 coin spill! One Indian went to the man of the house and I kept an 1881 Indian and my first 3 cent 1870 nickel! Wasn’t even on my radar! After a shocking permission Al and Don joined in! Nexted hole my second ever seated quarter (1876)! More indian followed and then an 1886V nickel (key date!) and ho hum a skeleton key. Too bad a dog guarded the side and back yard but who knows maybe a return would get us more good recoveries! Thanks for bringing me along guys! And thank you home owner!

That's quite the hunt, Noah! I'm still waiting for a 3 cent nickel. Did the guy stay with you most of the time? Did you have to keep ringing the door to get him to come out and watch you dig?

After the first hole he said go for it. Only saw him once after at the window when Don waved at him.

Thanks Chris. Usually I give up the sidewalk leading up to the house in favor of the less hunted out side yard. All the goodies were along the path to the door. Just wow.

All I can say is :wow:

No wait, that's not all I can say.

What a mind blowing hunt! Everyone is commenting on the Seated Quarter, and IT IS A NICE FIND, but I think it's actually the fourth best coin you found.

That 1886 V Nickel is a monumental find! KEY DATE that guides for $275 in G-4 condition! NICE!

And an 1870 Indian Head to boot! Another scarce date! Can you tell if it has the shallow "N" or the bold "N" on the back?

A Three Cent Nickel is a very tough coin for detectorists to find because they ring up like junk! They ring up as 12-04 on the E-Trac which very few people would dig. How lucky of you to find one in a spill like that! WONDERFUL!

AMAZING HUNT!

Not sure how I missed this post! WOW!!! Congrats Noah on a great variety of awesome finds. That's only the second nickel 3-center I've ever seen dug. Are you still having trouble with pics uploading sideways? Next time you upload, turn your computer on it's side first and see if that fixes it! Great post! Best wishes and HH, Dave.
