Medieval Coin Spill! Amazing Find!

Full Metal Digger

Hey Diggers,
I was detecting up on musket ball hill after work today and got a faint signal next to a large tree. I dug down about 8 inches and saw something that looked like a shiny gum wrapper. I looked at it closer and realized it was a hammered silver coin! I swept the coil over the pile of dirt and got a little chirp and found half of another one. Then I found the other half. Sadly my shovel broke the coin when I was digging. (they are very fragile coins). I swung the coil all around and no more signals. Not satisfied, I kept digging dirt out of the hole with my hand and when I stuck the pin pointer in the hole it went off! I pulled out a third coin! I have marked the spot and will return to do a full excavation.

My coins were minted between 1250 and 1300! They are about the size of a dime and depict the hand of God on one side and a Knights Templar cross on the other.

Holy cow, that's incredible! Going to be tough topping those finds! But definitely, check back. Maybe you found the start of a hoard! Good luck!

I don't know Dave? They kinda look like aluminum tokens to me.

I guess it's not often you can knock 515 years off your oldest coin! LOL

Not too often. But for us "new worlders" it can happen! And when it does.... boy is that exciting!! :happydance02: :happydance02:
Congrats Buddy!

Sorry I woke you up to congratulate you

I'm proud to say I've detected with "The Great Daddy Digger!!" When you become rich and famous don't forget us little people. :notworthy:

Super finds. You must be still smiling, I know I would be. Can't wait to see the results of the "full excavation". Congrats on those coins..:thumbsup02:

Very cool ! It's hard to imagine a pocket spill that old !

I went back tonight with a spoon and my pin pointer. I enlarged the hole and found one more coin. Tomorrow Tom and I are going back with shovels to strip off several inches of overburden and then run our detectors over that area again. Maybe it's a cache.

BIG congrats on finding those beauties. If it was me, a full excavation would mean cutting down the tree.:lolsign:
