Hey Diggers,
I was detecting up on musket ball hill after work today and got a faint signal next to a large tree. I dug down about 8 inches and saw something that looked like a shiny gum wrapper. I looked at it closer and realized it was a hammered silver coin! I swept the coil over the pile of dirt and got a little chirp and found half of another one. Then I found the other half. Sadly my shovel broke the coin when I was digging. (they are very fragile coins). I swung the coil all around and no more signals. Not satisfied, I kept digging dirt out of the hole with my hand and when I stuck the pin pointer in the hole it went off! I pulled out a third coin! I have marked the spot and will return to do a full excavation.
My coins were minted between 1250 and 1300! They are about the size of a dime and depict the hand of God on one side and a Knights Templar cross on the other.

Drew, Germany has 16 states, each with their own detecting laws. Most require a license but mine does not. Luckily my state has the most relaxed rules about detecting.

I went back tonight with a spoon and my pin pointer. I enlarged the hole and found one more coin. Tomorrow Tom and I are going back with shovels to strip off several inches of overburden and then run our detectors over that area again. Maybe it's a cache.
