Last year the city tore up the main drag and side walks to put in the new water and sewer system. It was my golden opportunity to find things that have been covered for a very long time. During the whole process I made a lot of great coin and relic finds, but my favorite was a button. I was hunting in front of the oldest church in town, and they had just removed the side walk there that day. Lots of coins to be had there including a brown, but very details 1918D Buffalo nickel. While there I got what looked to be a deep penny signal on the "E" after digging it up I found it to be a brass button. Once cleaned I saw the Michigan Militia emblem and knew it was very old. Looked it up and it came from the tunic of a Michigan Civil War soldier Circa 1864-65. It now resides in our county museum.

Wow, what a great find! Now that's a wonderful piece of history, and it came out of the ground in pretty good shape. I've never seen a button like it. I'm glad it ended up in your county museum so everyone can enjoy it.

Really nice button Hoser! Variety MG5 in Albert's book (pp. 179-80). Glad to see it found a good home.
