Hi all,
On one short hunt last week to my local bean field it finally gave up an old coin, an 186x IH. Can't quite make out the last digit yet since it's pretty toasty. Looks like 1860, but it's too thin to be a fatty. Still happy to finally see an oldie out of that site!
Saturday I had the whole day to myself. The town I researched goes back to the early half of the 1800s and has a really big public square across from the original school house. But once I arrived I quickly realised that it must have been pounded to death as there we literally zero signals of any sort in 98% of the park. A few nails, one single wheat and one saving find-a huge solid sterling bracelet just under the grass.
While driving to my back-up site I spotted a little park in an unincorporated hamlet of about 2 blocks size. So of course I pulled over to give it a try. Again, very few signals. But I did find an old hub from a spoked wheel that was quite deep It was a low swampy lot so figured maybe anything good had sunk below normal coil depth. But along the main road at one corner I got a bouncy high tone mixed with trash. About 4 inches down I popped a round copper piece I've never seen before, but it had a date of 1864. Further research shows it's a civil war political type token that's fairly rare. Here's the link to a web site showing an undug photo also listing it's rarity as R2. http://www.cwtoken.com/Civil_War_Token_Type_Set/Patriotics/Pages/LCT_-_Miss_Liberty_-_Coronet_Tiara.html#3
I switched to the big coil at this time. This got me my only silver of the day, a rosie. Not more than 2 minutes later a car pulls up. Lady gets our and tells me she's the town clerk and that detecting wasn't allowed there. Wow, booted from a place that remote? Uncool for sure.
Last stop netted a nice bunch of wheats. I was really hoping for a lot more for the day, but can't complain with the keepers I did find.
