Hey Diggers,
Today I did a little door knocking. I ended up with 4 permissions in the old part of town and managed a few keepers. One yard I visited is a yard that Digger Don, Tim Ill Digger and I got permission for back in early March. We ended up not doing the yard because the leaves were piled too deep to swing the coil. Today I noticed the leaves were gone and the owner happened to be outside. I stopped and chatted for a few minutes and he said no problem go ahead. The main part of the yard had NO coins. It may have been detected before.

There was a 5-foot wide strip of dirt/grass between the driveway and the walk up to the house. Right off the bat I was getting clad quarters and memorial cents, then a couple wheat cents. On my third pass I got a faint 12-44 signal at 8 inches. This would normally be a memorial cent but the depth indicated it could be something older. As I dug down, my probe started signaling 12-47! I was positive it was big silver. I cursed under my breath that it better NOT be a clad quarter! After getting all the dirt out of the hole I was surprised to see a large copper disk in my dirt pile. A token perhaps? Then I realized it was a large cent! 1849! Woo-hoo!

After I filled in the hole I swung the coil and only about 12 inches away I got another 12-47 at 7 inches. I was thinking maybe another large cent but was happy to see a silver dime come out of the ground! A 1944 merc. I also snagged some interesting tokens and a button at the other yards.

Here is some pics. Thanks for looking and HH, Dave.

Way to sniff out a oldie from that little patch of yard Dave! :thumbsup01:
Congrats!
I figured that there had to be a old coin or two in that patch. It just soooo congested there. A real high traffic area in that yard. It being in between the house and the driveway. Way to go.

Thanks guys, I don't get many LCs in my neck of the woods so they are always a treat to find.

Thanks Tony, the button was a nice surprise but those LCs are never expected. Too many things ring in as 12-47 and I never think "Oh maybe that's a large cent."

Great hunt! Thanks for sharing your finds!

Thanks, I appreciate that.

Some nice finds

Thanks! What part of Ohio are you in?

Tim, all three of us passed over that spot when we were there. The conditions were just much better when I went back and I could hear that signal pretty good.

Very nice set of finds. The LC is in great shape. Congrats!

Thanks John!

Like the way you display your finds. Most of all, the large cent is awesome. Wipe it on your neck, and let the sweat soak into and enhance the details. What a beaut!

Been a while since I got deep silver let alone a large cent. Brings me to a question. Are deeper targets always faint? Do you have to swing slower to catch them or are they obvious? Find myself lately chasing "iffy" signals hoping for those deep older coins. Thanks for sharing.

Tim, it's not that the very deep targets are faint, it's more that they are tiny. They are tiny and the signal is very short. It's easy to miss them if you swing too quickly.

Interesting. I always have found the shallow signals to be very short and easy to miss. Perhaps I need someone to look over my settings. With the double D coil my understanding was that deep signals wouldn't be missed as easily as the pulse was more can shaped rather than a cone like older Whites. Anyways what you are saying is that I need to go back to the standard slow and close, overlapping sweeps. Will do. Thanks. :)

Nice finds, Dave. Interestingly enough, I've had a few LC pop out at 2" deep (ref your statement on the merc). The latest one was just that.
Even tho I'm good with the nature shots, you are doing well with the finds macro shots.
