Last week I had a few short hunts that produce a couple silver, an 1881 Indian, several wheats and a rare find for WI., an 1851 Large Cent. The site was a new permission for me that dates to the early 1840's. My hunt started out good with a couple wheats and the Indian. Then it slowed down, It seemed that most of the area had fill dirt. One area is now a flower garden that is used for weddings and has several grass paths. The owner watched me dig a couple holes and was OK with my technique so he let he have the run of the property. On the edge of one of the paths I got a solid hit that was reading deepish on the Deus. I thought maybe silver, WOW! was I surprised when I saw the largie come out of the ground. The 2 silvers 1917 Merc and 1947 Rosie came from a church site that I have pounded with my other machines. My wheat total for the week was 19.
Wow great coins ! check that 51' closely there was a mint error that year ! Congrats !!:notworthy:

Huge congrats on that largie! It's a rare find in our region since most settlements only date back to around 1850 or so. Seems the Deus is working out great for you!

Great job, glad to see you are still out prospecting, your skills continue to show. I don't ever expect to find a large cent in the northern part of Wisconsin! Sometime would love to hear more about your impressions/experiences with the Deus and compare/contrast with Etrac & CTX. Maybe a post for a winter day when not much else is going on?

I know the felling. It's not too often a largie comes to light here in the mid-west. Thats a pleasant surprise! :yahoo:
How many LC's does this one make for you over the years?

Excellent finds and congrats! Largies are very common finds in the old country of NE, but typically didn't find their way as far west as IL/WI. Regardless a very nice find sir.

Grats on getting an LC, Jeff. You said the site dates to 1840. By 1840, 40% of the population lived between the Appalachian and Rocky Mtns. It's surprising that there aren't more LC found in that region.
