Field hunting can be an adventure…and a work out too! Tuesday we checked out a site that a farmer told me about, this farmer owns many thousands of acres spread out over three counties, we have been detecting in his fields for years and he is super nice. He mentioned this spot because he saw brick in his field and knew we would be interested in checking it out. I did research on this huge field and found that there was not only this site but four others! We went Tuesday and quickly found the first site, a lot of brick and glass…and modern trash and iron…and iron and modern trash! Why so much modern trash I do not know since this site was far from the road I surmise that it was still standing until the 1950’s. Diane found a wheat cent and I hit around the outskirts a bit to see if I could turn up anything but no luck. We then went out to find the other site not far from it and I was able to find this too and while it had some modern trash it was significantly better than the other site. It was a moderate temperature day but the wind was amazing. Steady 25-30 mph and gusts up to 45 mph, it was difficult at times even to swing the detector and when I would lay it down the strong gusts would cause it to vibrate and I could see the coil moving…which made for some interesting falsing in my ear! This day the only coins we found were some wheat cents but we did get some nice relics including this nice brass buckle.

The next day we returned to look for the other sites, the first one I tried to find just didn’t seem to be there, I was puzzled since I am not too bad on locating sites via the old maps and overlays so perhaps this was a “ghost” site. We then went way out to find another site that had two houses very near each other and while I found the spot, brick shards some glass and crockery there were virtually no signals, not even much in the way of iron. I did find a china cuff button on top of the ground but nothing else. After spending a half hour or so expanding the search area we decided to go back to the other site that produced yesterday. This is where the work out came in we were probably a half mile from that site so counting walking all the way out and then back across…..well let’s say it beat a day at the gym anyway! Today we had more success finding some more relics and wheat cents and at last a couple older coins as I found two Indian Heads.

Diane found a gold filled locket it was marked 20 12kt over Sterling so it is gold filled on silver the company was gone by 1950 but was more prominent in the 1920’s and 30’s.

I found this very heavy brass door knob and Diane found the ceramic one which is nice since it is not chipped up like so many of these seem to be.

I found 8 marbles including a melted one and Diane found one and a lot of buttons. These eyeball finds always are a sweet bonus.

I also found this chunk of mica, I love the color and layers in this type of rock.

Nice finds and love the old buckle. Definitely a lot of 20th century stuff in there, but heck, you nabbed a lot of nice finds, including the marbles.

Congrats on your field adventures Tony. You and Diane did okay. Those IHCs are in pretty good shape for field finds. I must admit though that the marbles are my favorite! Best wishes and HH, Dave.

Nice finds Tony.
I gotta do more field hunting. I got a place that has 22 + 10 + 25 + 30 acres each, mostly fields. All I could come up with were 2 memorials where one was on the edge of one field and the other was in the cart path to the fields. One ox shoe came up as well as some lead and a piece of brass or copper.... But with the stone walls there that exist, a 1750 house still near by which one or more of those fields used to belong to along with the other fields belonging to a big name in CT throughout the 1700s and 1800s I'm certain there has to be something there. I cant imagine its been hit before and with the vast acreage I'm sure it cant be a pounded site. I just apparently cant seem to find the areas with the most activity unless I am near a cellar hole.

I do a lot of the same type of detecting. Look for homes on old maps that are now just farm fields. I kinda consider it another form of cellar hole hunting, just the cellar has been filled in and the plows have spread everything around. Anyways, congrats on your finds!

I love the buckle Tony and was noticing the beveled inside edges of what would had to have been the underneath and the other side that is not .As I mentioned on FB , these buckles are very scrutinized on their age and actual use . Congrats to you and Diane on the nice field finds .
