Managed to get out at lunchtime to an old iron-infested site in the woods that has given up large coppers in the past. I've had 3 other machines in there in the past, and this was the first spin in there with the E-Trac.
First target was a rough recovery, about 6-7 inches down thru several roots -- and when I saw the edge of it, almost bailed as it looked like a canslaw or other junk, but I've never seen deep canslaw at this old site, so I worked thru the roots and it was this big silver thing (actual size relative to the quarter), I'm not sure what it is; its not a brooch or pendant, but I don't think it is a coin either. Has 3 hallmarks on the back -- the one says it is .875 silver, the other is of a bear, and the third is of some sort of bird. I'm guessing it is Swiss, whatever it is, based on the marks. Could be about 100 years old, could be newer, I guess. (The scans didn't come out great cause it's bent (its pretty thin)). Also is stamped J 137073 -- don't know what that is about.
Also pulled the quarter -- it was directly on edge and right under an iron nail. Amazing. Once I got the iron out of the way, it rang more like a half dollar or silver dollar for some reason -- I'm thinking 1700s site, big half dollar/silver dollar sound, but it was not to be. Also pulled a badly corroded wheat as the only other coin of the hunt.
