Hello all,

These are my finds from yesterday : nice thimbles, roman coins, 17th century coins, including a very nice 1639 double tournois of King Louis XIII.

But, I also found this... It is my first big silver coin. It is as big as a Morgan dollar !!
It was waiting for me in the vineyards. :)

It is a 1876 5 Francs, Hercule type. Mint is "K" which is the city of Bordeaux.
On the trim, you can read "DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE", which means "God protects France". Scratches on the back are not mine.

Yes, Yes and YES !!! Big silver feels fantastic !!!

That 1639 copper is spectacular! Congrats on some awesome finds. That big silver is incredible too. Does France make you leave the finds behind like England does?

Thanks ! Well the law tends to be rough when it comes to metal detecting but it is also blurry. We'd love to have a system similar to the Treasure Act and we are surely fighting for that. It is also hard to bring the whole community together. :( So far, I have always obtained permission from owners and always kept my finds. In an ideal situation, I'd rather be able to declare some of them. I have also communicated finds to archeologists... But never officially. That sucks ! :(

Here's a visual that might help with the size of that coin :)

Now that's a hunk of silver, thanks for the size comparison. Do you have the opportunity to get out with any other detectorists over there?

Thanks. As a matter of fact, I was with a fellow detectorist when I found this one. ;)
