Last Saturday Doug, Diane and I went out to the fields to find a new site, it was out in a cornfield….and when I say out I mean out at least three quarters of a mile from the road edge. We were successful in finding the spot and I quickly found a very nice suspender buckle, complete and the gripper still moves on it! Diane made the next good find a decent 1865 Indian Head. Doug had by this time found a nice flat button and a smooshed CW Eagle Button. I then had a decent 12-44 on the CTX although there was quite a bit of iron surrounding it. The target turned out to be a 1914-D Barber Dime. My next good signal was a 12-25 and when I brushed the corn stubble away…it disappeared! I swung the coil over the stubble I moved and the signal reappeared! It was a surface find of a really nice CW Eagle Button! We were each finding some miscellaneous stuff when I got this quite deep 12-46 and thinking Large Cent we did a video full dig and though not a Large Cent it turned out to be a nice buckle! Doug filled the Large Cent void when he got a N/D Braided Hair that was every bit of a ½” deep! We took a break and went across the road to another site where a house burned down Doug got a few wheaties and Diane a nice small buckle and I got some experience removing trash from the ground…not that I needed anymore!
Wednesday turned out to be a nice day here in Southwest Ohio and so I went out for a quick afternoon hunt the first 2 ½ hours did not turn up much just a couple of overall buttons and a very small child’s ring with just a hint of silver gilt on it. I was enjoying the weather if not enjoying the lack of success in finding a real keeper when I got a text that had some good news so feeling better I thought I would give it another few minutes. I got a repeatable 12-17 signal amidst the iron so I decided to dig it fully expecting another shotgun head stamp or possibly if I was fortunate a button. I saw a greenish edge and thought “Yep another head stamp” but to my surprise considering the TID it turned out to be a very nice Shield nickel! So counting my blessing I decided it was indeed time to go!
