Of course we've only been at this for a few weeks now, and most of you have likely found many but we found our first square nail today.:happydance01:51750
It's my understanding that after 1880 or so these were all cut from sheet and were more rectangular. This one looked rather rectangular to me. My youngest and I spent about an hour at this tiny little park behind our 1929 theater. Found several small pieces of metal like this that gave us some very strong signals, but this was the only one that still looked like a nail. Dave

Dave, that is indeed a fine example of a square nail. I hope you find many more, because that means you are in the right area! Some can sound really nice and there is just no way you can pass on it. Keep on plugging!

Nice condition for an old square nail, they tend to rust away pretty quickly in most cases. In my general area about all I find mostly are square nails as all the goodies have already been plucked. But since this is still technically my first detecting year, I have kept a few of the better examples in various sizes myself for show.

There is something wrong with you guys. Lol "hope you find many more" Really nice one.
"square" cut nails were actually first invented in the late 1700's

Yup, stay in that area. Square nails are always a good sign.
