I found this today at the elementary school, near my house, which I have been detecting for the past four years. My wife teases me about going back there, she thinks I have detected all that I can by now. But, I am still, surprisingly, finding interesting things. So.....what is this piece that I have found? What do ya'll think of the #187 engraved on it? Any ideas?

Pretty cool, is that brass? Could be a mold number for the blank casting, which was then hand finished.

Based on its heft, I'd guess it's from an old safe or furnace.
solid piece of brass there , no doubt !! curious as to what it went to .

Idk.. I'd take a guess that it was some sort of machine hinge. Like for a hopper door.

Yes it is a hefty piece of brass, at first I put it in my scrape bucket, but than took it out to show my wife and she said wow, that looks old. I than put a sos pad to it and it cleaned up. It does look old and hand curved. I`m guessing that I may not scrape it now. Thanks for every ones input. I wasn't sure where to post this,... in the what is it ,or here.
