Another short morning hunt produced some relics today. I'm excited about the winder and I guess that it's a wax seal attached. I can't read the name but it is engraved into the glass. I haven't cleaned it as yet. Thanks!

That's a great find! How old are you thinking it is?

OH MY!!! :shocked04:
That is an incredible find, Drew! I've never seen a wax seal attached to a watch winder like that! There's no doubt in my mind that's what it is. Very fancy winder and wax seal, both with some gilt left on them. I bet they will clean up beautifully.

That thing is awesome Drew! And I think that is about enough out of you for the week, you have gone way past the "nice finds" quota :envious:

Thanks guys!! Ska, I found it 20 yrds from one of the oldest cellar holes I've been to. It was the only non-iron thing there, and not much iron either. The surrounding walls were half buried...but the script writing and the plated attachment rings make me think it's 1800s. So I don't know, I hope someone chimes in.

I mirrored the image and enlarged it, and to my eye the script on the wax seal clearly says "Saturday".

 My wife just figured it out too, but with a magnifying glass. Thanks Tony!!!:clapping::notworthy:
I wonder if it was meant to personally post mark envelopes.
Thank you Luke, it does have lots of gold still on it!
As I look around the net for info on this thing I found an example of something I had in my "What's It" pile. Apparently this is a wax seal fob.

WTG Drew! You've been on quite a streak. Have all of your finds lately been coming out of the same site?

Thanks Isaac and Roger, I'm also curious as to the Saturday bit Isaac.
Today I hit a new site Roger, that winder was near the cellar hole and the rest was a 1/4 mile away in some wooded, penned in fields which must have been associated with another property. Sadly there wasn't much swinging area at the winder site.
the watch winder is a very nice ornate one Drew bet it will clean up nice and show off all that gilt. great finds !:clapping:

Fantastic finds Drew. Love the ornate suspender buckle as well. Origin of the wax seal (if that's what it is) gives me two ideas. Could the surname of the individual be Saturday? That is an uncommon but definitely real surname. Also, and less likely, could it be a mid-19th century 7th Day Adventist seal, signifying Saturday as the true holy day? Seems the date of your cellar hole pre-dates the creation of the Adventist movement in the 1850s or so, plus cheaper mail delivery from the civil war period onward generally led to a quick decline in use of wax seals. Regardless that's a great find. You've certainly been kicking some butt over the past week or so. Congrats.

Wow, Drew. Nice finds. When you gonna take me to one of these places? I would expect it to be a set with the watch cuz the glass/stone are the same color. The seal just happens to be a little dirtier. John brings up some interesting concepts. Just remember how many times you get surprised with things pulled up at these sites which are completely opposite what you would expect from history.
And I think that is about enough out of you for the week, you have gone way past the "nice finds" quota :envious:
I second that!!

Thank you again guys...John, those are some interesting avenues to explore, thanks! Although it was yrds from the cellar hole there wasn't any other targets there....and there was an adjacent, much later, homestead. I surmise someone from that later family dropped it walking by what would have been a cellar hole even in his day.
