A Nice Fourth Of July Hunt!

Did a couple of door knocks on the Fourth and met some wonderful people and made some good finds. First house was an 1850’s house and we had high expectations but not so much was found but we were invited back and plan to do it again soon. Doug got six wheat cents earliest 1925, Diane got two wheat cents including a 1917 and I got one 1945-D wheat cent that was it for old coinage. But I did pull up a couple of interesting relics. One was a complete ladies compact, after I cleaned it up I saw the name on it and my research showed this.

But the first de Meridor case does have some historical significance. It was designed by one of the early American vanity case inventors – Charles Coryell – in 1923 and was manufactured by the Scovill Manufacturing Company of Waterbury CT. The case was what was termed ‘a watchcase design’ and these typically silver-toned, engine-turned, cases would be produced in their tens of thousands in three sizes; 1 ¾”(45mm) dia, 2 ¼”(56mm) dia or 2 9/16”(66mm) dia. Two sizes of oval varieties would also be produced but there is no evidence that ‘De Meridor’ adopted this shape.

I also found an spoon made by the National Silver Co. Its style is called the “Adam” and dates from 1917. It is Electro Plated Nickel Silver a high quality plated spoon. Nickel Silver is also called German Silver and the Silver is then plated on top of it.

We then moved on to another house we had hunted before since we only had about an hour left to hunt, Doug got two wheat cents, I got another compact case but this time only half and Diane saved the day with a 1943-P War Nickel.

Nice finds Tony and Diane. I loved the video also. I did not know that nickel silver or German silver contains NO silver! That's what I love about this hobby. You learn new stuff all the time. Thanks for posting and HH, Dave.
