1st Large Cent this year & Sweet Looking 1891 V Nickel

I went back up to Wisconsin to give it another go. Although I tried, I didn't dig any Silver. As I was driving to my destination, I noticed a church Steeple way off in the middle of nowhere. I took a quick left and headed toward it. This never happens when I find old churches, but some one was actually there. they gave me permission to hunt this very old 1844 church. I wasn't swinging more than 10 minutes and dug a 9" nickel. A very clean and green 1891 V Nickel. So now I'm thinking I found a Honey Hole. Nope, another hour and 20 minutes produced nothing but a couple of wheats and a shell casing. . It still amazes me how often I find a good coin right off the bat and then nothing. A bit later in the day, I hit a house and dug an 1889 Indian, 5 wheats and another laxative token. ( found one last month in Illinois )

This morning, before heading home, I decided to go back to the park where I got the two cent piece last week. I hunted for a couple of hours. All i was finding were old Jeffersons and deep memorials. Then I got a 12-43 at 6". I turned the plug and there at the bottom of the hole was a green rim sticking out. I thought it was some kind of slug or something, then I saw the "ONE CENT". Wow, my first large cent of the year. The reverse is extremely worn and the front is basically non existent.

very sharp looking V-nickle Don and I believe the Large cent is a "Braided Hair" type 1839 to 1857 , :wow: boy was it sure circulated around a lot .

Great finds Don! That V nickel is without a doubt the BEST dug one I have ever seen. The large cent was indeed very circulated. I also like the little tow truck piece. Too bad the front is missing though. It looks very old. Best wishes and HH, Dave.

I have had the same thing happen to me where I go to a new place and bam I get a silver first hole and then 2 hours later still have just the one silver.

Nice score on the largie. I will go with Dan on the type. Is the front(obverse) counter-stamped? And yeah that V is in nice shape.

I didn't know those nickels were that pretty. It's very exciting when you find something immediately, thoughts of untouched site dance through your head...usually the dream is crushed :lol: Nice job!:canada:

That V nickel is in incredible shape. That coppers is so worn down probably dropped in the last quarter of the 19th century. Great day(s) digging!

Anybody have any suggestions on cleaning the reverse of the V Nickel a little better or should I leave well enough alone?

That's one sweet V nickel. They usually come out of the ground so corroded. I'd leave it alone. Cleaning can do more harm than good. Nice find.
