View Full Version : Only One Keeper Today, But it Made My Day - Awesome

Alec and I drove up to Wisconsin again today. Alec found an 1860s Park on Google Earth that he wanted to try.
I decided to take the long way up and hit a few towns along the way. That proved to be a waste of time. Nobody home at most of the houses I tried. I did get one yes and found nothing but clad.
Anyway, we finally got to the park Alec found. The moment we got there, it started pouring rain. After sitting in the car watching You Tube videos for 45 minutes, it finally stopped. About 15 minutes into the hunt I got a deep 12-41. I figured I got a wheat so I dug my plug. Still not deep enough, so I dig a little more and scoop it out. Ok, not in the hole. There in my dirt pile was a beautiful 1865 Two Cent Piece. Man, I wasn't expecting that. Made my day!! This is the second one I've ever dug.
The first one was in pretty toasted condition. This one looks great, atleast to me!! LOL
As i was recording it for You Tube , Bam, it started pouring again, HARD. It never stopped the entire trip home.
We'll be going back.
I still need to clean it better. I just sponged it down with soap and water.

Wow, Awesome find Don, congrats!
Hoping to hit a few old parks soon myself-have a list of 6 so far ranging from 1837 to 1848, and 6 more 1896 and earlier.

Congrats Don, that is a beautiful coin. An early drop too since the "WE" is still quite strong. You can sure tell which side was facing up for the last 150 years too! Best wishes and HH, Dave.

Sweet find Don!:thumbsup01:
Congrats!
Like the others have said, it's in pretty good shape as is.
I'm always afraid to try to clean some things too much.
I'd hate to ruin the pretty green patina.
Way better than two crusty zincolns!!:hystericallaugh:

Nice coin! Two cent pieces don't come up that often as they weren't very popular and weren't made for that long. I found my first one more than 30 years ago and didn't find my second until last year. Now I'm on a roll with them including 5 so far this year including 2 in one day. They are all dated 1864. Way to go Don!

Super great find and in excellent shape. The "WE" is so prominent as Daddydigger stated and I am pretty sure that is one key point on grading 2 cent pieces.
very sharp coin Don , anyone would be excited to find one in that shape ! congrats

Great coin Don! Congrats! I have been lucky enough to find two and I have to say that cleaning those 2 centers was one of the most rewarding things I've done since I started detecting. They come out so great, and yours is no exception! My favorite thing about 2 centers is that they were the first coin to have "In God We Trust". Love those coins. Great find!

That is a beautiful two cent piece, Don! Very little wear and amazing detail on it! It cleaned up very nicely too. It's always a bonus to find one that is not dated 1864!

Wow. In great shape. There's been a bit of rain here within the past few weeks, off an on. I am thinking tho judging by yesterday that coins are reading a little deeper than they actually are due to it. I thought you had got a couple this year already....

Nope, this is the second one I've ever dug. The one I dug this spring was an 1864 and it was toasty. I was hoping to find a nice one. Looks like I got my wish.
Thanks, Don
She's a beauty Don, congrats!:thumbsup02:
