An 1800's Kind Of Day

Today a small park yielded several more coins from the 1800's - a few coppers, several Indian Head cents, and even an old silver coin. It was tough detecting because of the heat and dry ground, but I remained in the shaded areas and drank plenty of liquid to keep me going.

When I first saw the edge of the coin while it was in the hole I thought I had myself a seated quarter. So close! I'll take a Barber quarter any day though. :yes:

I also dug up one mercury dime, dated 1928. The Indian Head cents are dated 188??, 1881, 1896, 1898, 1907, and 1908.

The large cent is dated 1830. This one is in much better shape than others I have found at parks.

This large copper is a French 10 Centimes, dated 1856.

I haven't been able to make out much in the way of details from this next one, but I believe it is a British Half Penny. I can make out the year, 1875.

Finally a readable large cent :happydance01: What is the disc with the monograms on it. Is it silver, cause it looks like a love token? That would be one big coin love token if it is. It probably is an 1877 Indian Head cent.:lol: :lol: I would be depressed. :crying02:

The monogrammed disc appears to have been a pin. It is aluminum. I would have loved for it to be silver. :grin:

Nice finds Angel! It took me a bit, but looking at the pin, I see the letters S,S,A, and E. Don't know what order they are supposed to be in though. Maybe a secret society pin:huh:

That Barber quarter is high on my most wanted list... I'm not holding my breath though. I've got to stop looking at these threads, because they only feed my obsession with the hobby. And they make me depressed over my piles of clad. lol

It has the markings on the back where the pin broke off. It's seemed to be much too light for it to be silver. :confused: But you may be right. Aluminum would have shown a good deal of corrosion.

OK, OK then, it's an Aluminum love brooch :lol: All kidding aside, aluminum was a rare and expensive metal when first discovered. That is until they figured out an easy way to refine it. That brooch does resemble the look of a street merchant's engraved love token, made from a coin.

That's true, it was considered to be rare once.:lol: Too bad most of the old aluminum items dug up are in such poor shape though. :bummer:

I'll have to see if I can find something online similar to the one I found. :confused:

That will be so true:lol:! :lol: I like to think of the older wheat cents as the Indian Head cents of today. :cheesysmile: I love finding them. :smitten:
