Today I tried detecting at a nearby small park, but the ground was much too hard to dig into and there was no shade to offer relief from the relentless sun. So I turned my attention to a small town common. At least the trees there shaded the ground and the occasional breeze made detecting in the heat bearable. The common yielded a few good coins too, a 2-cent piece, dated 1866, five Indian Head cents, dated 1881, 1885, 1891, 1898, and 1909, and three silver dimes, date 1916, 1920, and 1923, as well as other interesting finds.
I cringed when I first saw the 1920 dime as I thought I had gouged it. This past Wednesday I had given a 1902 Barber dime a small scratch on the reverse side and I did not want to have a repeat. It turns out the damage to the mercury dime had been there already. The 1916 Barber dime is in great condition.
This 2-cent piece was a very sweet surprise. Others I have found have been in very poor shape, but this one held up quite well.
The 1900 Indian Head cent is from a short hunt yesterday at another town common. The one dated 1881 is all bent up.
A cute and tiny ring.
Some other miscellaneous finds. I found the button with the anchor design during yesterday's hunt.
I do love finding the old wheat cents, and there were several today.
HH!
