View Full Version : Digger Al's First Large Cent, 1835

A buddy of mine got permission to hunt a house that he thought was built in the 1870s. Turns out the the owner wasn't sure when it was built, but he knew it was there in the 1850s.
Anyway, we weren't there more than ten minutes and Alec called us over. He just dug a very iffy deep 12-47 signal and and pulled his first ever Large Cent out of an 11" hole. It is also the oldest coin that he's ever dug.Talk about being excited.
After that we had high hopes for the yard. We hunted about another hour and a half and only found one wheat cent each and I dug a 1943 Canadian penny. Even so, today was a great hunt.
We probably only hunted 10% of the property and the home owner invited us back any time.

Way to go Al!! [emoji122]
Nice find!!
Congrats!![emoji2]
Some hate seeing their old coins holed.
Not me. I think it adds character. [emoji106]
As long as the hole isn't through the date, like on my oldest US coin. [emoji22]

(This is Al, too lazy to log on to my own account) Thanks guys. And Tim, I agree. When I saw that it was holed I got even more excited! I like how the hole doesn't even go all the way through haha.

WTG Al. Having only done 10% of the yard I hope the other 90% produces lots of keepers. The only holed coin I have found is also a LC but it has about 14 holes in it??????

Nice going, Alec! :thumbsup02:
Now that's an oldie! That large cent came out of the ground looking pretty good! It looks like it must have been laying face down, as the obverse is the good side. I bet you are itching to hunt the rest of that property. I hope there are more goodies waiting for you guys there.
:congrats:

Congrats on a largie. Better shape than my 1820, which being found in the woods should have had a canopy of leaves helping preserve it a little better. I find it intriguing how sometimes the homeowner actually knows more about the property than you do. Where I got the Balboa, I had no idea the owner who built the place worked with large clocks for towers. However, I am sure there is also the reverse. I have two on my list where the supposed owners, now, were alive last sale date. One being 1850 and the other 1813. Umm.. they must be the oldest people on Earth if they owned it since then. And I have seen countless places saying built 1900 when they were clearly on the 1868 map. Even having the street named for the owner in 1868. So I am sure, a few are none the wiser.

Congrats Al on your first large cent! Pulling that first one out is a thrill. I know Taltahull who posted above just loves LC's. I love them to. Got on a roll finding them a couple of years ago and found 45 over the last two years. Know what? They are still a thrill to find.
