Had a brief period without rain yesterday and as the cold is on the way I thought I would get out for a bit. Hit a new spot and came up with a 1749 George II halfpence. It may be toasted, but I always like finding early coppers.

That's a great find, Don, especially for a short hunt between rain showers! I certainly have seen coppers in much worse condition, at least you can see details and even read the date!
Congrats on the terrific find! :thumbsup02:

I agree with Tony, not that toasted. Always good to see a KG posted and I hope your area is not frozen in yet.

Great start to your year indeed Don! Ground is now frozen rock solid to 8-10" now here in VT. Now the impatient waiting game begins.

Al & John, grass areas are now frozen solid. I'm hoping we may still have a little bit of woods with heavy leaf cover south of here that may provide a few spots to detect. Dirt in the woods is softer and the leaves can provide some insulation. I'm not very hopeful though as temps this week are not going to be above freezing and may be below 0.

Agree Don, perhaps if you go into the deeper woods. Usually up here though, the best luck in doing that is when you have a solid snow cover (not too deep) which insulates the ground beneath. We have essentially no snow cover in the Champlain Valley right now, which has allowed the frost depth to penetrate quite deep with our recent cold stretch. I'm sure if you were willing to put in some strong effort, you could make a go for it deep in the woods down there though.
