Large Cent From The Button Field!

Monday was a cloudy day in Southwestern Ohio but the temperatures moderated and so we decided to get out for a field hunt. Doug came down and we went to the Button Field, despite the cornstalks it was a bit muddy and the clay like soil was quite sticky. We were there about 10 minutes and of course Doug got a button and Diane found a brass piece that may be some sort of valve. I was working a row and got a solid 12-44 on the CTX and I had a good feeling about what I was to dig. A turn of the shovel revealed the edge of a green colored coin, and it was another Large Cent a very crusty one. Doug predicted it would be an 1845 and he was right! Despite our best efforts not a whole lot more was found but I know there will be more in the future.

The Large Cent has reasonable details despite the corrosion.

The next best find was the Railroad Baggage Tag, I thought it was just a piece of brass until I got home and cleaned it up.

A big heavy brass piece that Diane found looks like a cap end for a chair leg or some kind of pole…??

Another brass piece made of two parts that have some movement to them, perhaps some kind of valve.

Hey Tony, that "chair leg" has the characteristics of an ox knob. I wonder if they made them with a closed top...? Although, now that I think about it...any wooden pole might have that kind of top on it. That is awesome that Doug predicted the date!!

Your on a hot streak Tony. Gratz on another LC. The brass piece that Diane found indeed goes on the end of a wooden pole, most likely at the end of a walking cane to protect it from wear.
