Went back to where Dan and I hunted yesterday. Was heading back to the farthest corn field swinging away and I get a VDI of 83. About 6" down I see a nice green disc, the obverse is toast but the reverse is okay. It's a 1787 Ct copper. Then a couple of cuff buttons in a row, then a dandy. Now this next find I am all excited about cause I have never found a State copper before. I think that this one is in very good shape also. It also rang up as 83 VDI but only about 3" down. Even with my bad eyesight I could tell that this coin was in pretty good shape. I have done nothing to it except rubbed a soft toothbrush across it. It's a CT copper dated 1787, I know nothing about varieties or even if they exist for this coin.
Somewhere in between the buttons and a copper I dug a whatsit......any ideas.
I think that this is the first time that I have gotten 2 colonial coppers in one hunt.
Thanks for reading and HH.
Well as you can see by reading some of the replies, these coppers are both Ct's.
omg!!!! al , that ct copper is unbelievable , well done mate that's a banner find for sure and i have never seen one come out of the ground looking that good.....wow.
Al I'm glad you got again today !
Al they are both Connecticut coppers :cheering:well done . that place has some age to it i you narrow down where the original home site was you'll find a lot more goodies.
the nice copper looks like a Miller 33.34-Z.11. a "rare" type Al
here is a link to some pictures of the type in question

Dan, you mean that I got 2 CT coppers in this hunt......great, now I have to amend my post title..... thanks for the ID's.
most are calling this variety as an R-5 on the rarity scale Al , my book lists it as 33-64 "known" examples. Nice copper Al :perfect10:

Dan, thanks for the info, not many known...:wow:. Do you think that its a 1787 and not a 1788?

Al it looks like an 88 because the last 7 sits lower then the 8 but it is a 1787 coin .

I was thinking too when I saw it. The stars and the word connec was fairly visible. I like how good the other 8[7]
Came out of the ground. Congrats.

Congrats on your first CT Copper. I can only dream of digging a coin from the 1700s. Great job
I bet that site has much more to give.

Brian, I did this property twice about 5 years ago and never went back. Back them I had gotten some IH's and two toasted coppers. Really don't know why I never returned but am glad that I did.

Great finds. I have a M.33.34-Z.3 (below) and a M.33.33-Z.11, but not a 33.34-Z.11. Your coin is exceptional for the variety. May have been an XF when it was lost. Way to go! I'd be back pounding that spot until the ground freezes.

Don, nice looking coin. I would be very happy if my coin graded out at as XF. Seeing that I found three 1787 coins( 1 KG and 2 Ct) in two days there I will definitely be going back.
