Today I again attempted to get an early start and head out to detect at a Central MA park, but once more things did not work out as planned. Instead, I made an afternoon trip to the park I worked yesterday and began to grid a small section. After a while the heat and humidity were becoming unbearable so I took off to a nearby town common where the trees would offer some shade. I did well there, managing one seated dime, dated 1856, 12 Indian Head cents, a 1855 Victoria Copper Penny, and two old buttons.
I picked up the seated dime near the base of a large tree, eight inches down under some roots. It's a miracle I didn't scratch the coin!

The 1855 Victoria copper is huge, larger than a half dollar, thick and heavy. It was down in the packed soil a good 10 inches or so.

I was concentrating on picking up the Indian Head cent signals among the trash, slowly crawling along, but the effort paid off. I dug up a total of twelve.
They are dated: 1876, 1880, 1886, 1900, 1902, 1903, 1905, 1905, 1906, 1906, 1906, and 1907.

There are several old wheat cents in the pile. The oldest is dated 1911. There are 15 in total.

And lastly, two old buttons. The Boy's Brigade button is in very good condition.

Sweet hunt. You gonna count that copper as two? Great looking Seated Dime. It looks like it would clean up nicely. You missed that Indian by one year :ticked: I think your hunt turned out quite well for not going where you wanted to go.

Holy moly, what a day! I've come to the conclusion that people were more plentiful and a lot wealthier in central Mass in the 1800's than here in Jefferson Co. Wisconsin.
Nice finds Angel!

:clapping: What a variety of finds. It's amazing that the old parks you go to are still very fertile with old coins. The 1876 IH is a good date, Ebay price are as high as $300 in AU condition. How did it clean up? Also, what's the huge copper's face value? One Penny? Where did you say you live? I would definitely leave that patina on the large copper, who knows how bad it is underneath. Just my opinion from experience.
Congrats!!

Yeah, maybe I should count it as two.
I think I need to cancel trips more often if these are going to be the results.

I haven't cleaned any of the Indian Head cents I have found this year. That will likely be a winter project. The face value on the large copper is one penny. I don't remove the patina on the coppers, just the caked on soil.

His record is, I think, something like 26 indian heads within a three hour time frame from a 100ft by 100 ft area.
