Hit a field tonight where I had pulled two coppers in the spring and got my second 2 Center....an 1864 just like my first one. Check out the before and after pic...it sure looked nasty when it first came out of the ground!

Your cleaning job is fantastic. That 2 cent piece is just beautiful. What was your cleaning method?

How'd you clean it up? I know only two or three pennies I found had some caked on crud and looked nasty when they came out of the ground but had some really great detail when I took the stuff off with a toothpick. One was under some trees so Idk if there was some sap that protected it in the ground. Nice find. Still waiting for my two-center.

At that point when I took the pictures all I had done is pick at it with wooden kabob skewers...you can see them in the background. You can buy them in any grocery store and they are very cheap so I use a million of them. They are very sharp so you can be very precise and they are much easier to work with than a tooth pic. The back of the coin was more stubborn so it is soaking in EVOO now so I can get the rest off but but really all I did so far was pick at it. I think these coins are more bronze than copper (like an Indian Head) so they clean much better than Wheaties or LC's or Colonial Coppers....from my experience anyway. I tried this same method on my first draped bust half cent that I found this year and proceeded to destroy the coin in 2 seconds flat....all the detail on the coin was on the crusty outer shell and it came right off and left nothing underneath. Not the case with 2 Centers thankfully.

I should show you my 1901 IH and the condition it is in and maybe you would say different. lol. It looks almost like the coin has the efflorescence that happens on wet concrete, but with a bit of green patina.
