Digger Don and I decided at the last minute to get together for a hunt today, so we met at a small town that is about halfway between us. We started at an old park where I got a war nickel and a 1937 Mercury Dime.
Finds were scarce at this park so we moved on to the high school. There I found a 1939-D Washington Quarter within the first 30 seconds, and then... nothing. Alec did get a Rosie there though.
So we decided to do some door knocking. We ended up getting permission at a house that was really old but finds weren't too plentiful. Don did find an Indian Head though which inspired us to keep trying. After about an hour I finally got a decent signal in the back yard, a 12-40 that was about 8" deep. I thought it was going to be a wheat cent. When I saw a larger-sized disc at the bottom of the hole I thought it was a token, but then I saw the shield and knew that it was a Two-Cent Piece! It is an 1864, same as the other one I found back in 2012. It is in really nice shape too! Then about ten feet away I got a nice high-pitched signal that ended up being a sterling silver ring.
From there we went to a different town to a large field behind their high school. At this site I found a 1942-S Washington Quarter and a 1944-D Mercury Dime.
Here are today's finds:

Here is the Two-Cent Piece before cleaning and after. I think it will clean up a little better still:

Here are today's keepers:

I think the original initial had worn off this silver signet ring, and someone crudely engraved a "D" on it in later years.

Nothing too exciting in the "relics" department, although I did find another hub center from a Model T Ford:

Thanks for looking and happy hunting! :beerbuddy:

OMG, that Two Cent Piece cleaned up Gorgeous. That was by far the best find of the day. Not a bad bunch of Silver for a park and a school that had
" nothing left in them" :lolsign:
As always Tony, we had a great time hunting with you. Till next time, HH

Good eye, Ricky. I'm pretty sure it is a die crack.

Awesome finds and great 2 cent Tony! Wasn't it fun to clean? They're like a big bronze IH. Very fun to clean a coin like that when you know how great it will come out underneath. Is it a small motto? I found an 1864 and honestly I can not tell. Also kind of cool to think that the 1864 2 cent coin is the first year of the first US coin that had the motto " In God We Trust" on it. Great coin!
wow :shocked05: Tony that 2-center is a real beauty congrats on a great haul of coins .:notworthy:

It is definitely the more common large motto variety. That was the first thing I checked after I got it cleaned up.

Great finds Tony. Could you tell me/us your full cleaning method since it came out so great?

I think it turned out so well due to the coin itself, not because there was anything special about my cleaning methods. Initially I cleaned it with a drop of liquid laundry detergent on a wet washcloth. I just rubbed it until most of the dirt was gone.
The second time I let the coin soak in water and dish washing liquid for a few minutes, then cleaned the stubborn dirt off with a wooden toothpick. I dried the coin off with a soft towel.
That's it!

Now that I am on a browser that shows the pics, the two center looks great. The large lettering might make it more common but prob not the die crack. I shall have to check if that really is the case. I've just tried vinegar lately on some finds and it's not harming the patina but the large black areas on copper or bronze/brass items seems to come up really well. And it takes like 40 min checking at 10 min intervals and using toothbrush and water.
