1899 Dog Tax Tag & a few other relics

Hi,

This is my first post here....hope the pics look good! I got permission to detect at an 1880's house in Evansville Wi, and these are my finds so far. The Evansville 1899 Dog Tax tag is my favorite! I also found the lid thing with the horse on it.....not sure what its from. The Crotal bell(has #1 size on it), the decorative buckle, the decorative(hook?) type thing, and the small flat button. I can make out "rich orange" on the back of the button. The long narrow silver piece I believe is from a ladies small pocket knife.....it has a sterling mark and rang up like silver on the CTX3030. I also found 1901 & 1914 barber dimes, and 1900 & 1907 Indian head pennies. I cant wait to get back and see what else is there! Thanks for looking......DanG

Hey Dan , welcome to the forum :waving: great coins and relics .

the "slide buckle" could be from a vintage woman's shoe and the horse motif item could very well be a decorative front to a horse rosette . the late 1800's to early 1900 era ones were usually gilted stamped brass or copper and lead filled backs , yours looks like the lead fell out ( they often do) the decorative hook is a Victorian era picture hook or wall moulding hook . congrats on the good stuff and glad you joined us here Dan .

Dan...thanks for all the info! Bell-Two......i sent a scan of the dog tax tag to Bill Bone who has written books on dog tags, and he informed me that it was indeed rare and a new... oldest known for Evansville! Very exciting!!

Nice finds Dan. Anytime you can dip into the 1800's on a dog tag means you have a real nice tag :thumbsup01: I'm happy to see any pre '40's tags and love the ones from the teens. I'm just guessing, but I think that rosette is probably from around the turn of the 20th century. I have some here that I assume are fairly modern and have the same empty back as yours. I think they get lighter as they get newer. Yours has a great engraving on it!

Don....it is a small world! Im From the Madison area, but my parents and grandparents lived in Evansville. Great little city with so much history and so many historic houses. Im going back to that same house tomorrow to finish up detecting the yard.....hope it yields more relics!!
