A trip to the Under-Taker got me a Barber Quarter

I stopped today and got permission to detect the grounds keepers home at a local cemetery that was started in 1834.
All found was a couple of wheats so I decided to knock on the door and tell him thanks before I headed home. When I did he suggested I go out and try in his back yard,The Cemetery. I told him i wouldn't feel comfortable detecting there, but thanks anyway. Then he suggested just do along the narrow roads then. So I walked out there with him and saw that there was about 6 feet of unoccupied ground along the road. Long story short. I Walked 15 feet along the road. dug 2 wheats in one hole ( a 1920 & 1911) and then got an 1898 Barber quarter at 10". It was getting dark so I left.
So, here is the Question, would you detect in a cemetery if the guy in charge not only said it was ok, but was pushing you to do it.

its been discused here before and most think it would not make the hobby and the detectorist look good

Ok, That answers that. I agree, it felt extremely weird being there. The spot he took me to was a road along an open area with some benches.
Needless to say, I will not be going back. Sorry to disappoint.

No problem, Don. I didn't mean for it to sound like I was busting your chops. If it came across that way I apologize. To be honest, on a personal level I do not consider cemeteries to be "sacred" places, but I understand that I am probably a minority in that regard. The "no detecting in cemeteries" rule is in place to respect the feelings of people who do consider cemeteries as a place of reverence, and to ensure that the hobby isn't cast in a negative light.

Thanks Tony, the sad part is that I really didn't want to in the first place. I have never even thought of doing one. This guy was really pushing me to do it. I should have stood my ground.

Nice Barber Don. I had a guy offer to let me detect an 1800s family cemetery once bet it seemed too creepy.

Don , I don't blame your apprehensions to detect the cemetery (even if it was just the roads with permission) because of a few reasons . First your sure to strongly offend some there paying their respects to loved ones , and second a passer by or someone outside the cemetery might get the wrong idea about detecting in cemeteries from now on. it just opens a whole can of worms and can shed a bad light on the hobby that we really don't need .

.I was detecting a school and the priest yard and he suggested i try the cemetary across thae road , i told the same i wasnt comfortable doing a grave yard , he understood and i didnt detect it
after i declined i tried an area by the old scool and did quite well, a standing liberty qyarter and 2 washington silver in the same hole , My friend joe kress was there another time with me and got 12 silver rosies in a small area ,

Great Barber Don. I'd have the same apprehension and politely decline if that had occurred to me as well. Even when I come across old cemeteries in the woods on my cellar hole hunts (and I encounter quite a few) I give them a wide berth out of respect. I may search the old road outside the stone walled boundary (hey...they parked the carriages there), but that's as close as I'm comfortable with.

Nice Barber Don. This age old cemetery situation arises now and then. As everybody else has stated its all about the Code of Ethics that our group (metal detectorists) should maintain.
