Back to the musketball field

June 8th - We had a Sunday off from softball and after working a fire dept detail in the morning I got home to find my daughter heading to a birthday party and my wife was going shopping so what else was I suppose to do. The field was plowed and is ready to be planted so I figured this would be my last chance until fall. Found 5 more dropped .69 balls (we have to be close to 50 found in this field), a KG (no date) and the biggest arrow head I have ever found.

Brian , I'm certain you have an army encampment or tail end of a battle field there. you copper is George III and most likely 1770's another fit for a Revolutionary war encampment. great point by the way:shocked02:

Dan, other than musketballs we really haven't found much that would indicate a camp (as much as I would love for it to be one) I almost wonder if a cartridge or box of musketballs were left there and the plows have moved them around some as most have been found in one area. I started gps plotting the musketballs after our third trip there when I get all the data together I will post it.

Brian , isn't your field just a mile or two from a major battle ?? it could very well be an over night campsite before the battle , not a whole lot would of been dropped other than ammunition , flints being passed around to the men and maybe some buttons .

Yes, and I'm sure your right. I just remember going to encampment sites with my dad back in the day (early 80's) and finding balls, buttons, spoons...

This site doesn't even have any shards of plates or glass. BUT the area would have been traveled both before and after the battles. It is a large field about 70 acres and we only have access to about half of it. Maybe we will find more next year when we can detect closer to the river.

Great finds and good luck. One thing I have learned about history is armies tended to camp anywhere there was water near by. But not far from it if possible. Don't give up. Safe & HH

Copper certainly looks like a Georgivs III, but it could be a Machins Mills or Vermont piece. There are some coins with a George III obverse with a Vermont reverse that was made in NY at Machins Mills.
