Found my oldest coin yet, 162 years old

Alec and I went out this morning and hunted an old park for the first time. Alec had the E-trac first, of course, and withing 5 minutes found himself a VERY toasted Indian Head. After that I decided it's my turn. Got a nice 12-31 at about 6 inches deep, and thought I had my first Indian, but when I pulled it out I thought I had a button because of it was so small, but when I got it out and saw the 1852 on the front and Alec told me it was a 3 cent silver. I have never even seen one, let alone dig one. That made my day.

After a while we decided to try a church that we saw on the way to the park. When we got there the owner of the property was there and we asked if we could detect and he said yes. He said somebody has been there before but feel free to try, so we did. In a span of about 2 hours Alec found a 1904 barber quarter in the same hole as a 1918 buffalo nickel (first silver quarter ever), a SLQ with no date, and a 1940 Merc. I found a 1908 Barber quarter, 1 wheat penny, and a pocket watch about a foot deep.

All this in one day, and we still have 2 days of the weekend left. :cool:

Sometimes the AT-Pro, sometimes just resting my back and watching. All the coins today were with the E-Trac except for the wheatie.

Thank you and yes, by far our best hunt ever. This was the first time we dug more than one silver at one site.

He was close. They started making 3 cent pieces out of the copper /nickel composition in1865 till 1889. Before that they were silver, like yours! Those are called "trimes".

It almost looked like the 3 cent had some copper with it. Any chance there was something else with it. That is a GREAT find along with the Barber Quarters. Wisconsin Digger
