I decided to go hit a house that was built in the 1870's and is a museum which I have permission to hunt. It has been really pounded over the years and there is probably no silver left. So my strategy was to dig every low signal and hunt the edges. I dug a ton of pull tabs and can slaw but it was worth it! I dug 3 J.W. Mann tokens, two 10 cent and one 25 cent. Some buffalo nickels and my very first shield nickel, an 1868. The gold ring was definitely a surprise and really got my heart pounding. :yahoo: It was at about four inches the same depth as the tokens which date to around 1912.

To me it looks more like garnet due to the deeper red. However sapphires usually have impurities making them translucent or opaque (for star spphires). Rubies are really deep pink sapphires. Since the shape of the band is plain and thin, I'm gonna guess it's 14K and those are minimum CZ. Possibly real diamond, but the TCWt of all might be too high judging by pic. There are 10 pc.
I wonder why out in the mid country it seems there be an abundance of tokens for markets, but not so much around here.

What a beautiful ring! :loveit: Wow, what a find!
Love the tokens too. :thumbsup02:
AND you got your very first Shield Nickel! I remember how thrilled I was when I finally got one. (My first was also an 1868.) That's awesome!

Great looking ring and a smart strategy to use your detector in that manner. :thumbsup01: Wonder how many people have been there and passed on them low readings  Bring it to a jeweler to see what the stones are. There is a variety of Garnet that I've found here:

But we would just be guessing from a picture.

Thanks, I don't know why there aren't many tokens out east. Around here they are often the only thing left by the cherry pickers at a site. Which suits me just fine. The next time I go to the city I will take the ring to a jeweler and try to find out more about it.

its not there are less tokens its just the tokens here seem to be less local type and more the standard "hard times" type that are issued by the larger banks and not the business type.
