Thursday I tried to get permission to hunt a field. I was too late to find the guy who owns it. Friday I went up on a hunt in the woods, nothing but iron around the cellar holes. Only good thing was knowing not to bother going back. It was hit real hard. I been itching because it's been over a week and a half since I got out. Today I found the guy. He wanted me to do him a favor to find a property marker on another site. I did that, and then went to the field. It was maybe 20 min before I found a button and a strange cast piece. The button has some green patina. I thought it was a pin at first. After that was a clad. They were near a house built 1936. Then I checked the field. I found quite a bit of can-slaw. After about another 20 min I found two different size musket balls. I ended up digging up the big piece of iron which was a blade from the tractor. I took a pic of it before I threw it out. Any idea about the small cast piece? It's got like a nipple piece, and as I said it has a slight line as it was cast.386773867838679

Interesting. Is the cast piece solid ? I wonder if it could have been used in the manufacturing of clay pipes?

That button looks old. Any pattern on it? The musket balls are cool- I'd love to find one of those.

Sorry I couldn't hook up to hunt with you this weekend. We'll definitely get together at some point.

Yes it's solid. Besides the fact it didn't ring up as iron, I used a magnet near it and it definitely wasn't iron/nickel. It is heavy for its size. You may have a good idea on what it is. Otherwise I was thinking they used weights for measure. One side is round. The other looks like it's had slices removed. I was thinking material removed to make its weight a particular value. Your guess is as good as mine here. Lol.

It might have a slight pattern. I am unsure my phone cam can pick up on what my eyes see. There is a small area that looks like it's printed and the epsilon for an 'E'. It's thin..but I can't fathom how the pattern would be gone but I can see a beveled edge around entire thing.

The musket balls are two different calibers so maybe one who knows better can say if the smaller was pistol and larger was rifle. And u will find some as long as u are near house older than 1850 give or take a few years when they changed the shape of the projectiles. Yes, we'll have to get out. Np about this weekend.

Dan, I may get there for YTC. Just checked it's Thurs. I can bring the two weird pieces I found lately and you can still be stumped as what they are. haha. I did see your post on the Museum. Wow, that's a lot of reads there.

Rob, with MD I agree with persistence, but in comparison to dating the coins might be easier than scoring, don't cost you tons of $ to get lucky, and the coins don't nag or get jealous when you find another one. I'd make a comment about coming home with your arm hurting from swinging when you dont get lucky..hoping no one takes that the wrong way.

Dan, read your earlier post. I actually did see you write correct day of the week, but the incorrect date. I went by the date.

Yes, but a wife can cost you half your $. hahah. Sometimes It's good to be out of cell range. I know with the gf I get messages while detecting and it's not so easy having to pull down detector, pull off gloves, and reply. I like the second post, too. Just as long as she doesn't come back with any similar retort for something she wants.
