Did what is probably the last field hunt of the year. Returned to a field where I got an 1867 Indian last time, this time I got a nice copper thimble only slightly mushed, a Disston Saw logo. I was getting a jumpy 12-23 amidst a bunch of iron and when I saw the coin in the hole I was thinking a fatty Indian or Flying Eagle. Turned out to be a 1859 Indian, pretty toasty can’t quite see the date but knew it was the 1859 because the reverse did not have the shield at top between wreath.

Nice. Love finding the '59. Just wish the composition they used would hold up better.

I talked to one of the farmers whose field I got the Fatty in and I asked him what his schedule is he said as soon as the field dry out from the showers we are getting this week he will be planting, so probably sometime next week. By this time last year about everything was being planted. It will be door knocking time from then on!

Congrats on the 1859 Fatty, Tony! :thumbsup02:
The Fatty Indian Head has eluded me so far. It's at the top of my bucket list.
Interesting thimble and saw emblem too. :clapping:

I used to collect and hand sharpen old saws, especially Disston. One of the ways to date Disston saws is the handle medallion. Henry Disston used many different medallion designs, making dating them fairly straight forward. He fazed out "H. Disston" and began using "H. Disston and Son" on the medallion right at the end of the civil war, making your medallion no newer than civil war. He later changed the name to "H. Disston and Sons." I checked with my online resource, The Disstonian Institute, and compared your medallion to those pictured and believe your medallion is exactly Civil War, between 1860 and 1865.

The placement of the eagle's eye in comparison to the "S" in Disston is consistent with yours for those years.
I would love to find a Disston medallion!

Once they are planted they will be a no go until the fall harvest. Normally we hunt all winter long but we had two months of snow and brutal cold like much of the midwest and north east. So it was a short hunting season this year ....so the finds were way down this year for us.
