so last night me and another detecting friend also named chris decided to hit a place near where we live that has thrown up no less than 65 coppers in the last three years along with an 1832 half dime and 2 bits of spanish reals along with SLQs wheats and mercs bearing in mind this field is only 600ft by 150ft.
anyway, chris got into detecting last year and after asking me what detector to get went out and bought the whites coin master that i told him had been so good to me before i changed to the f4.
his first outing with me after he got it was over to the field i am now talking about , his first ever find ? a bit of clipped spanish real !!!!!! i mean come on !!!!! , well since then he has made some great finds with what can only be called a blisting machine for $189 !!!!.
anyway i digress.
yesterday evening we decided to hit this field that the town has just done there yearly plow on so it can be ready for people to plant veg and stuff on.
after an hour i had a wheat, a strange heavy little jagged edged coin looking thingy made of lead and a button, when i hear chris from 100ft away from me shouting "yes...yes..." i look up to see a beaming chris walking towards me shouting "reale...i got another reale".
after plonking it in my hand i could see this was a little different to the others , a lot more markings on both sides and part of a date which i had to look at like 10 times to make sure i was seeing it right 1676 , to say i was in shock was an understatement, a 338 year old bit of spanish silver in the palm of my hand.
i expressed to chris that this was a find of a life time but i think he was somewhere else in his head by this time thinking of pirates and sunken treasure...lol.
after looking the coin up on the internet we have found out its a 1676 spanish bolivia cob the same as the one on this link.
i have asked him to post pictures of it which i hope he will do tonight.
cheers
lee.
