Dave and I tried another new site today and although it was already hit pretty good, we still managed to pull out some nice keepers.
The War of 1812 Artillery button was on top of the ground. When I heard the target I kicked the leaves away and there it was right on top of the dirt. I haven't cleaned it all because honestly, I am afraid to touch it. It has a perfect shank and even has the back mark also, it is not a flat button. It is actually a concave or dome style one piece. The dirt layer is very thin but hard so I am not sure what do with it yet.
The Silver applied shoe buckle was buried about 4 inches deep on top of the cellar hole lip. The iron tongue and chape crumpled away after the dirt clump thawed out. Took me a while to get it out because it was frozen solid into the lip of the cellar hole. I also got a second shoe buckle frame that seems to be even older than the silver one. The weather was perfect today making it a great over all hunt.
:shocked05:wow what a great early Light Artillery button , its a real beauty:loveit: Todd. These were used from 1808 to 1821 , does it have the "wedged" shank??
The silver plated shoe buckle is a beautiful piece :wow: great day :perfect10:

What a great shoe buckle Todd :shocked04::shocked04: Nice Light Artillery button too @1808-1821. Albert's list it as AY40. You sure it has a back mark? Albert's doesn't list a back mark for that particular one. But his book is an old one, so other varieties could be out there. Great hunt!!!
Hey , you just beat me to it Dan

Hey , you just beat me to it Dan  Thanks for looking up the button George. 100% it has a back mark and I will post a pic in a few mins but it still has dirt caked on it.
well tell Davey its a scripted LA button or buy him some glasses ;) Todd these buttons are made of brass and usually hold up pretty well . if your nervous about cleaning the layer of dirt off you could always wet it good and set it under a lamp bulb to heat up and dry the dirt so it flakes away . then a light dry brushing would be ok follow by some ren wax.

your getting slow old man  I will try it Dan but I honestly don't think it will flake off, it is very thin and hard. Here are picks of the back...

looks like A.M.Peasly Boston for the back mark that would make it from 1808 to 1825

Great looking button and silver buckle. I think leaving that button alone is a very good idea.

You are right about seeing the silver shine in the hole. I yelled to Dave"I think I found something special" as my heart started racing.
