View Full Version : Mule coin
I haven't been posting much and I have a coin I found this year I thought I would show in hopes of finding more info on what family it belongs to. The bust is counterfeiting the George II young head. (1729-39) and the reverse 1775 King George the III. Also the other coins were dug the same day at the same site, Also found a large French made Continental USA button from this site. Thanks for looking HH

Wow, very cool finds.
We don't find those in Illinois
Well, at least I don't
Wow just noticed the date on the Connecticut copper is 17877 Never noticed that.
its a very interesting coin Coop the bust is not an exact "young head" match as you can tell if you put the other young head George coin side by side . any way you could do a picture of them side by side?? definitely a counterfeit coin and not a very good one as most colonists back then would of certainly known the difference as to which ruler would of been on the thrown in 1775. still doesn't explain why it was made this way though.

I know it not an exact match but that's the style its depicting. Im not exactly sure why they were made that way. Did u see the date on the Connecticut copper? I dont have the holed KG II anymore so I cant post pic side by side.

There not all counterfeit, Just the mule which is from an unidentified family and considered fairly rare at the least. HH coop
Did u see the date on the Connecticut copper?
i'll give the Connecticut book i have a look to see if there are any close but i suspect its just the way the dirt or damage on the coin is , similar to how it almost looks like another 7 over the 8 . you almost never see a double or triple date error on these coins because they were not repunched the doubling would be more of the whole reverse because the entire die moved while it was being pressed.

That's true but even under a loop it looks like another 7. Maybe added with a printing plate engraving tool? I will try and get a better pic. thanks for the help.

Some great coppers Coop. Love the Geo III or II, or whatever it is  The CT copper looks strange at first glance, but I'm thinking the top part of that last (extra) 7 is just a part of the double line that separates the date from lady britannia. Love the landscape Vermont :loveit:
Yeah I think your right just damage not another 7
Thanks George. I think your right.

Very cool old coppers for sure :thumbsup02:
Coop your Connecticut is a Miller 33.37-Z.9 variety type , there is definitely no "doubling" of parts of the date . its a nice example of that coin Coop
heres a link to coinfacts on that particular type

I think Del is right on the CT and Vermont. I've scanned in my own 33.37-Z.9 for you to take a look. I could scan in my Ryder 2 also, but it's not as balanced as it appears to suffer from a strike through error. As for the mule, 99% of George III and a lot of the George II pieces you find are counterfeit. More likely than to find a genuine piece. They did all sorts of stuff back than and even though finding a Geo II obverse with a 1775 reverse is unusual, it doesn't completely surprise me. BTW, the 33.39-Z.7 is quiet rare and I think it still holds an R-6 rating (less than 30 know) I believe the one I have is third finest. I should add mine came from the Dr Thomas Hall collection. He wrote the original reference on CT's in 1892 that was revised by Miller in 1920. Don 3589835899

Wow that's a beautiful copper!!!!! Im aware most KG ll & lll coppers are counterfeit. Mine is called a mule coin and is quite rare here in the states. The mules were broken down into families and mine is from an unknown family. Coin facts has the 33.39-Z.7 listed as an R4 rarity I think. Thanks for the info. HH
