Black Friday Hunt with Drew and Dan

I met up with Drew and Dan this morning to burn off a few calories from Thanksgiving and try our luck with a hunt at a cellar hole site. Just a bit nippy in the morning but it turned out nice. It was a great hunt and everyone got on the board with a copper and some relics. Drew got on the board first with his copper and a little while later I was able to pull this CT copper from the hillside near the cellar hole. It rang up pretty low with a VDI in the low 40's.

I hope you can get enough detail from the obverse Dan for an ID because the reverse is toast.

Pulled a few odds and ends including a flat button with a root growing through the shank.

We had a couple of deer hunters walk through the site. They didn't seem too keen on sharing the woods. But we had just as much right as them to be there and we all had orange on.

All in all it was a great time. Thanks again Dan for setting up the hunt and sharing your wisdom. It was great to meet you Drew! Though I don't recall you digging any ox shoes :thumbsup02:

But what exactly is a CT Copper ?

Don a Connecticut copper was coinage made in Connecticut and for the state from 1785 to 1788 when it was just beginning as a state . they were minted in New Haven ct. and is often called one of the "state coppers" . some of the earliest states minted their own coins (Massachusetts , Vermont ,New York ,New Jersey and Virginia) and all were considered legal to exchange for goods before the federal mint made Official coins for all the states. Massachusetts had two denomination coins "cents" and "half cents" , Connecticut coppers were considered the equivalent to a half cent . most are very common types while some are extremely rare and collectible . heres a nice link to read about it.

Great state coin, congrats on a great hunt.

That coin must have been heads down for a couple centuries. Very pronounced edge and lots of detail.
I had a blast and it was very nice to meet you Jeff. Let me know when you guys want to hunt again and I'll find something in that area.
PS I DID find an ox shoe :lol: it was my best sounding target all day, including the copper.

hey Jeff can you see any hint of detail on the reverse ?? the reason I ask is the front of this coin has a very porous or uneven background while the legends are strong. we both agreed it was a very low vdi reading for a copper so its possible that it was a sand cast counterfeit and they didn't even cast the reverse image at all. making it a very crude copy , seeing reverse detail would obviously make it a bit more sophisticated or professional and possibly attribute it to one of the more famous counterfeiters of the time period. i'm still working on the variety type.

Jeff , here is the front runner to what i think might be your coin's variety.

a 1787 Miller 26 obverse.

the first two pictures are of the same obverse ...
the first obverse picture has less wear and notice both the "N" in "Connec"and other highlighted areas.

the second picture is also the same obverse but has more wear and notice the "N" are more solid filled or closed and the highlighted areas are more distorted. yours was definately copied from a more worn coin as evident from the "N's" and distorted attributes and lack of detail in the bust area.

the last picture is of your coin's obverse with the same highlighted areas

I'm pretty confident this could be your obverse type and there are a possible of three reverse types and it might be impossible to accurately id which one you have

not many at all Jeff , that obverse variety is a very scarce type (40 or 50 "known") and the fact its a counterfeit could bring a decent price to a collector. its a very cool and very uncommon find.:perfect10:
